Not as far as I know. He should move to firelink without unlocking the depths.

I rarely ever go to the depths anymore... I think he moves to Firelink after you've killed the Gaping Dragon. Or, if you skip him, after you've killed Quelaag. Either way, you don't need to talk to him. So if you skip the depths entirely, he'll still show up in Firelink.
