More interesting backstab mechanic?

What if you couldn't backstab unless you were walking. No jogging or spritning just walking. It would make stealthy theif guys better and stop a lot of stupid pvp.

Furthermore, what if the hornet ring's effect changed to allow you to backstab while you were running/sprinting. Small weapons like knives instead of having extra critical damage could allow you to backstab while you were jogging(not sprinting). Also players using an item or flasking could be backstabbed regardless of your running speed (in pvp situations etc.) because they are stationary.

I think it would be cool, it could just be retarted idk. One thing is for sure though, you wont have to worry about it ever happening in a patch so no hate comments lol. It's just a thought. Let me know if you think any tweaks could make this work without ruining the game.

I have proposed reducing the backstab window. The backstab should be done only if you are facing directly to the enemy's back and at 0 distance from his back. Also it should only be done while lock on is active, eliminating roll bs and pivot bs. Maybe adding a stealth mode (press R3 analog), but that could break PvP mechanics.

I don't think it's such a great suggestion because it would take away from backstabs being a tool used to punish opponent's mistakes. The Hornet's Ring is an interesting idea, but I think it'd be too restrictive... I don't know, not in the mood to think things through right now! My gut feeling tells me it would detract from gameplay, but I could be convinced otherwise.

I agree with Wyrm's suggestion about reducing the window, for sure. But I do not agree about the "you have to be locked-on" part, at all! Being able to simply run right by your opponent without lock-on and quickly turn around and backstab them (in PvE, especially) is a great offensive strategy in Dark Souls, and it would be a huge detraction to not be able to do that anymore. I'm rarely ever locked-on when I backstab, so I would be very disappointed to lose that ability.

My opinion is that the backstab window needs to be reduced, and that only certain weapons and weapon classes should have the ability to perform backstabs.

All weapons should be able to do backstabs, but if you reduced certain weapon's crit bonus, it would make it more of a, stop that healing, move against poise users. I don't think the window is too big, but if this came true, they'd still need to remove chain and other silly bs mechanics.

I disagree. It's not about the damage, or the crit modifier, it's about swing speed, and weapon purpose. I find it ridiculous that very large weapons, which are very slow and easy to dodge, should have the ability to perform a "grab-attack" like backstabbing. Just because you got behind your opponent for a fraction of a second shouldn't allow you to get a free hit on them that they would otherwise have been able to dodge twice before the attack would have connected!


Edit: actually, I like the waling suggestion for backstabbing with ultra-large weapons. If you catch your opponent off guard, and really sneak up behind them to perform the backstab, then to me it would be acceptable. But in a heated fight against an opponent that can dodge very quickly, I find it out of place.

Yes but its not all about realism either, if you can't backstab with a Claymore, how do you kill someone with full Havel's and heals all the time?

If you're using a claymore or bigger weapon, you have time to get a few hits in while they're flasking, so you can stun-lock them, or near it. Hit them again quickly enough and you'll stun-lock them, no need for a backstab. But flasking, along with other potential actions, could be exceptions. If your opponent is chugging estus, he's incapable of dodging at that moment, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to allow large weapons to do backstabs in that situation.

There is magic, realism has no place. As I've already stated, simply changing the animation for large weapons would negate the complaint, even with that enourmous sword I could trip you and slam the sword into you as you land. It wouldn't feel good, I promise. It even keeps with the "vital area strike" theory of critical attacks, your head and chest being caved in is bound to hit some vital areas.

As is, simply reducing the window would work well.

actually ya, I feel as though backstabs got too much of a buff. Atleast decrease the crit modifier on ultra weapons, say down to 60 or 70. That way you won't gave gits bs fishing with DMB-buffed UGS while wearing the hornet's ring. They'll just use the Rapier instead

and you'd screw those of us who use big weapons when we try to fight gankers. My biggest defense against multiple foes with the dgm is that if they even pretend to screw up they immediatly take a bs and die, without that they'll just heal and i'll never kill them

They shouldn't decrease the crit modifier for big weapons IMO, they're at too much of a disadvantage compared to quick weapons as it is, not to mention that all the bs gankers i've seen were using rapiers anyway.

I seem to recall the pvp in DeS, no one bothered with backstabs, which is why is was more interesting. So, they should make it like DeS: smaller window and get rid of the hornet's ring.
