They still do magic damage, the game is lying unfortunately. They do more poise damage tho.

Yes, the Dark magi(s) are in fact magic not physical. The physical aspects of the spells are: miniscule scaling with strength, better ability to poise break and physical knock back (Dark orb). They are still very good though and will for sure be even stronger with magic modifiers like Dragon Ring and Dusk Crown.
