Sif is some big *** wolf who is attacking you with a big *** sword. I don't know why anyone would want to keep that thing alive.

If you want to finish the game, you'll have to kill Sif. There's no way to spare him.

Because after you play the dlc and than go fight Sif it just turns into a sad fight. That other cut scene when he sniffs you because he remembers you makes it hard to fight him. And all he wanted to do was protect the memory of his former master

The only way to spare Sif from death and to have all areas open like the Kiln is to BB glitch your game with the abyss ring, which you can't do anymore since the new patch. The game doesn't allow for players to give you their ring online just like the orange ring and the BB glitch method only worked on first playthrough as the ring disappears from your inventory. Saving Sif when he was limping was nothing more than an April fool's joke that gets passed around as fact, bit like the one I'm hearing at the moment that Shiva's quest has been added in the 1.07 update.

There is no legit way to not kill him and progress through the entire game, there have been many rumours concerning Sif, but they've all been disproved with the passing of time.

It's sad and at the same time it's pretty fitting. If you think about it, along with the conclusion to the new content, you're giving Sif closure by killing him. I see the fight as Sif trying to protect you, at least after the new scene. He's guarding the item you need in order to traverse the abyss, which is exactly what did Artorias in, and after you help him and he helps you in Oolicile he becomes attached to you enough to not want the same fate for you. So by attacking you he's both trying to protect you from that fate and testing your ability to withstand it. By killing him you're helping him to transcend to wherever Arty has gone. All complete speculation, but that's how I see it.
The other thing that's kinda neat about this theory is that it links Alvina, and consequently the forest guardians, to doing the same thing. Alvina leads you to where Sif is trapped in the abyss, helping you to save him, and then in the present she, along with Sif, is indirectly trying to prevent the same fate from befalling you, and others. So really, under this rational, the forest guardians are combating the abyss by preventing it from gaining more victems
