    Motion-Controlled Gaming Empty Motion-Controlled Gaming

Post by Kyōkai Fri Jan 04, 2013 2:42 pm

To all the people who love motion-controlled gaming and games, I'm sorry, but...

...I hate motion-controlled gaming. Incredibly lacking in games that are actually accepted as good games by the majority of people and to be honest, it isn't really that smooth. :mask-father:

If you like or hate it, why?

I'm not a huge fan of motion-controlled games, although i find it refreshing to play something else in a while. Oh, sure it's not perfect, and there's a lack in good games, that doesn't mean the few good ones aren't worth playing. I don't play my kinect often, but when a friend comes over we have great fun. It's something different and that's what i like about it, because you can have lots of fun with it even if it's not perfect. Even then i wouldn't say that i love it, but rather that i simply just like it. You didn't give that option though...

Ah, well I guess "hate" was a bit too strong of a word for this topic in my case. Sure, it's different, but even so I personally have just never enjoyed it on my own nor have I enjoyed motion gaming with anyone else, seeing as how I've never had anyone come over to play with me. I've never really moved around a lot either, unless I absolutely need to. Yes. That's right. Even before Hōtarō Oreki's "energy saving" lifestyle became somewhat mainstream. Just another lazy person. Obscure references aside, that probably plays a big role in explaining why I don't like it as well. By the way, how did I not give you that option?

Although if there was a Kinect game I would want, it would be a Type-Moon game that allowed me to play as either Shiki Ryougi or Shiki Tohno. Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. :bas:

I resent it. It's just a gimmick. There's a reason why games are made for key-control. It is the fastest, easiest and most energy effective way to input into games.

Motion control on the otherhand is clunky, varying in effectiveness, and requires sometimes a lot of energy to do. Most people who play games want to play a game, not jump up and down or flap their arms around.

The reason the controller is better is you almost don't have to think about your inputs, they quickly become second nature to you, and due to this you can focus all your attention on the experience of the game. It's just all around better than motion controls... in most games.

The one thing i have to confess is that for some games, ones that are made perfectly to suit motion control like many wii sport-like games and on the PS3 the first thing that comes to mind is heavy rain, which would be awesome for motion control. However, these games are few and far between, and games due to them being manufactured to work mainly for controller wont be as effective when using motion control.

There is a serious lack of good games for it. And let's be honest, Kinect sucks in every possible way. I'm talking about Move now, that's has some potential, but it's true that sometimes it gets you tired and requires a lot of energy, but look at games like Killzone 3, with the Sharpshooter device and the playstation move and navigator, it was really awesome. Obviously a controller is always more precise and easy to use.

But in the future, when they perfect motion gaming, we will reach that wall that I think most of us want to experience, virtual reality gaming, you know, you get a helmet that shows you the in-game world, all your body is connected to the "console" so all your moves actually control your character, and that kind of things, it's really futuristic I know, and there are some years until we see that, but experimental devices like that are being developed now, like the Oculus helmet device, search it on google.

My only experience with motion controls that I really enjoyed was Killzone 3. It was smooth, fluid and felt like a natural extension.

I don't like it mainly because I think that the tech in motion-controlled games are still to underdeveloped for mainstream use. My key lesson with games is: To be able to play the game! The kinect should have been released later since it seems that somes games for it function better than others. Aside from dance games and some sports games I can't think of any game genre that could be put on motion-controlled for playing. Remember the Power Glove for the Nes? Replace the controller with your hand. A good idea for the time but a bad timing and underdeveloped tech. I know that motion can be the next big thing, but it needs more time before being put to marketing.

That's what I'm saying. It felt awesome. I think many people here didn't try that and gave it the time to get used to it before "condemning" motion-gaming in general. And as I said motion gaming is the ultimate way to immerse someone into a world, as I said with other devices they could create a true virtual reality, again the example I gave was Oculus:

I think this is the most flaccid thing I have ever read.

I like Sixaxis for emotes in Demon's/Dark Souls. It's really nice. It is the only thing which I have I've ever seen motion controls used for.that is both functional and useful.

You ever considered seeing if their first language is english before criticising their wording? It's pretty insensitive i gotta say.

However, there's a few games which use the sixaxis to nice effect. Heavy Rain implements it quite a lot (great game that i'd recommend btw) and series like motorstorm can use sixaxis though it's a ***** to get used to, though i think driving games using six axis captures the fine difficulty of driving at speed better than an analogue stick..

Sadly i haven't seen the sixaxis used much recently.. MAybe sony have given up on it?

The last games I saw using it were Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2. Although I rarely buy console games these days.

It all depends; stuff like Skyward Sword was pretty cool, but stuff like Fruit Ninja isn't worth my time.
I like stuff that compliments my actual gameplay, not the gameplay itself. I can't stand voice commands either, but Dead Space 3 looks like it will have a good use of such.

I can't believe I didn't see this poll earlier. PS3 has the best setup but again the games are lacking. Little Big Planet's second player use of Move is actually really cool. The Sports game that came with it is creepy accurate as long as it's set up right. Example: The very first time I tossed an in game frisbee in that game looked exactly like I throw a real one. It picked up every nuance of my wrist motion, arm motion, etc. It stunned me to be honest. All but the fencing game in that package is scary good and fun......if you like that kind of game. Serious....I think you can use Move for Heavy Rain. Not sure how well it panned out to be honest though.

Another good use of motion controls is the Vita. Yet again....it depends on the game. Gravity rush uses it to almost perfection. Instead of blatant, over the top controls it lets you pan the camera and gently nudge your character more precisely than traditional controls. Completely natural. I also played a racing demo that used it for a steering wheel. What made it over the top is that even though the Vita was tilted it maintained a natural view of the car, map, etc. so that the steering motion in no way affected reality. I can't even begin to describe how awesome this motion control was done. The gameplay was meh but the use of the tilt was pretty sweet.

My brother has a Wii and so does my former roommate. Some games are fun but the controls always end up super repetitive and boring in the end and the motion sensing wasn't actually all that accurate.

I've seen a Kinect at work and noticed input lag. Also, in anything other than ideal lighting it's almost completely useless (Move is better in low lighting for games that only need the controller input but anything requiring your body is also garbage in low light).

Conclusion: It can be fun for party games and insanely cool when used in other games to supplement buttons. Sony, the company that markets it the worst and is seen as the least innovative in the area is hands down, far and away, no questions asked waaaaaaaay better at it than Nintendo and Microsoft at this point (Unless the Wii U is amazing, never used one).

I feel like motion games are very hit or miss. There are some motion controlled games out there that I really enjoyed and others that I just prefer had never existed in the first place. I find most motion control games tend to be more fun when played using local co-op as well

Really I have found that some games do it right, while in the rest it either gets in the way or is just a gimmick. I find that when I have an option to either use it or use a normal controller, I opt for the non-motion every time. I have seen a handful of games do it well, but in the rest it was either pointless or ruined the game.
