Why do Japanese players assume everyone in the Dark Souls world is Japanese?

You don't know how many times some Japanese player private messages me with something like 手伝ってくれますか? Don't they know by my username I'm not even Japanese? Has anyone else experienced this with Japanese PS3 players?

I'm sure they've been messaged in English as well, so it cuts both ways.
If you get something like that there's not much you can do except ignore it or message them back in your main language that you do not understand Japanese. What else can you do?

Same reason spanish speaking players do. It's pretty annoying, especially when they have english names and they're sending hatemail(it always is).

Ive had almost the opposite experience.
Like when we have a good/bad co-op run, I check their profile (using the PS3 "Players Met" utility) and if I don't see english as one of their listed languages I usually just send a smiley or sad face (depending on how it went).
A lot of times I get a response back in perfect (or close enough to understand) English.

I've had a similar experience where mostly people who don't have English as their main language and are from a different country call me a "canadanoob".

Also, most japanese people speak at least some english (its a mandatory class in many schools) so an english username in no way indicates that the person isn't japanese.

A lot of Japanese players use romanised usernames, so I'm not surprised..
Then again you still usually be able to tell if the username is foreign to you..

You would think so but no. Most Japanese speak English very poorly or not at all. I know people who went to Japan to teach English.

Had something like that before. I was invaded at the Tomb and was looking around for the player and wasn't able to find them. They sent me a message in what looked like Japanese and I didn't know what it meant so I sent a message back saying I don't speak Japanese.
Needless to say because of my slow typing I was sent off of one of the cliffs of the Tomb with a backstab.

Just use what emoticons you can muster, that's how I communicate with players who don't type the same language as me. Tends to work out pretty well.
I win an invasion, they send me a message in japanese. I remember them being pretty nice and nearly beating me if not for a good swing, so I give them a smiley face. They send one back. I give them a face with a tongue out, they send me a cat. Then I invade them a few more times and trade blows. Everyone's happy.
Except those people that send me angry faces, SCREW THEM!

Again, at least some. I never said alot or well. Just like many people in southern california speak at least some spanish. Broken and severely limited perhaps, but there anyways in both cases.
To have an english username, as a japanese person, is not a stretch at all.
Knowing this (as many surely do), an english username is not a valid reason to assume someone isn't japanese.
Thats all I was saying.

Adding to what Forum said: Some mangas, and animes, tend to use other languages just because they sound cool. Bleach for instance uses Spanish and German every now and then. I've also heard a lot of j-pop and rock artists that use English. So even if not many people can actually speak or write it very well, they are still exposed to it quite frequently.

In all the time I've been playing DkS I've only ever received one message that I couldn't read, because it was written in oriental script, and I regularly go up against fellow Gamers from the Far East.

Haha sometimes I think they do it just to annoy people. I'm a natural born spanish speaker so I can usually understand the messages, but I'll reply things like "Me No Nintendo" and I'll get messages back in english. Then I bust out the spanish

Yeah I saw the funny side to it.I do not think he did it to be funny coz the message was not a hate text. But it was nice to talk in English b/c it took some time having messages back an forth with me using the Translater App....Sloth9230 wrote:Bioraptor wrote:I had a Spanish player message me once an so I used the translate app on my phone to read it.I also wrote him a reply back in Spanish using my App.He then writes back telling me my Spanish is bad in English

I've had conversations with Japanese players using only symbols before. Faces with different expressions and things. Even gave one I was co-oping with one of these (_)____)__________)))) when I was taking off to smoke.

I think that's a big part of the beauty of gestures and the carvings too. Some kinds of communication are universal

I appreciate the ridiculous complexity of Japanese emoticons. You can express nearly anything with them (probably because japan has been using them for longer than the rest of the world by a good number of years)
My keyboard is currently unable to make the proper symbols but my favorite is a little face with 2 hands kinda doing the "bring it on" gesture. I use it a lot when I get invasions of invade Japanese players and I always get a good response I have to google translate

^ I used it to have a conversation with a guy in Spanish once. Worked well enough for us to understand each other.

Whenever I want to write a message to somebody, I always first check their profile for languages they speak.
If it says English (United Kingdom) I will write the message in any form I wish.
If it says English (United States) I will write the message in simple English with short words.
If it doesn't say English, or it says only Japanese I will write the message in Engrish, or tourist level simplicity of "Thank you", or nothing at all.
