1 - Wait until Solaire is there (usually after you beat Anor Londo) and talk to him, I'm pretty sure he'll ask you to join. This is just me working from my memory, since I don't SunBro often.

Ignore what the guy above me said since he's wrong about the sunbro part.
You join those sissies by going up to the altar and praying to it when you have at least 25 faith. Everytime you get summoned by a host and you help him kill the boss the faith requirement to join goes down by 5.

Sunbros could very well seem like pushovers to pvp-oriented builds as they're usually designed with clearing an area boss in mind. Of course there are always people who would anticipate invasions and make a sunbro who can tank it, but generally they're only interested in killing the area boss.

Invasions happen less often in the last month, so i changed more to the other side (Invading), but before we (yes, unfair ganking w/o honor) usually killed the Invader pretty fast (around 10% i got killed, or host)...so if killing Invader is being a sissie...well then i am a sunbro sissie
