I want to be a Sunbro! (Sunlight Spear)

I recently discovered the fantastic aspect of co-op in Dark Souls and what better way to enrich myself in it then by joining the Sunbros? I just don't see any other way...

I was planning on going with a High DEX build with only the required amount of STR needed to wield my weapon (Probably a +15 Uchigatana). I also use Pyro as it doesn't scale with stats and it seems like a good choice.

Here is the dilemma, the sunbros are highly reliant on Faith to use the miracles. Is the sunlight spear worth all those level dumped on Faith? I was also interested in the weapon buffs, but those still require 30 Faith... I just feel like I could spend those levels on VIT and END.

Are the Sunbros really worth it?

I am currently a faith based sunbro, I find it helps a fair bit since I use a divine morningstar+10. But there is nothing that says that you can't be a faithless sunbro, I see it all the time

You can be a non faith sunbro, I have a few but to be honest it's so much more satisfying being a sunbro who wields lightning

While I'm at it, if I have a +15 weapon and apply resin or Sunlight Buff, do I lose my Scaling Bonus for my High DEX, just like when you upgrade a weapon to lightning or fire?

If so, I don't see the need in having high dex, unless I use my bow a lot.

I used to be a sunbro and that was oh so worth it for a time until people started only summoning me for 3v1 sessions instead of real co op. Be a good sunbro not one of the bad ones. It's always satisfying to slam a massive bolt of lightning into an enemys chest.

I've built a high level cleric to 125, and use the Sunlight Spear, and it's definitely worth it. The biggest upside to that miracle is the knockback effect. With level 50 Faith, you can walk into Tomb of Giants and literally blast large skellies off the cliff with that thing. There's only 5 casts, and it takes two slots, but man, what an ace in the hole to have.

I think another underrated set of spells is the Soothing and Bountiful Sunlight ones from the Princess Guard covenant. They're purely support spells meant for people who do a lot of coop, but if you're into helping people on really tough bosses like the Four Kings, they're worth it. Imagine a setup where you could cast anti-magic on the Kings, then give everyone in the group a huge blast of health. The further into NG+ you get, the more these become viable miracles.

May I then recommend emit force. Although it does less damage alone, you can have more amounts of it than sunlight spear, scales with both the princess ring and god of war ring, and it knocks back enemies more than the sunlight spear. Only downside is the range, though.

That's actually a great option to have if you wanted to belong to the Princess Guard, and still toss things around like rag dolls.

My main toon is a high-faith Sunbro and I have to say the Lightning and Great Lightning spears are extremely helpful in certain areas. Having a large number (ten each!) of lightning-damage projectiles means there are few ordinary mobs that can stand before you at range, and they also provide you something to spam in the first few moments of a boss battle to soften them up. They're not so good in PvP due to the ease with which they can be dodged, but then again there's nothing more satisfying than getting one to connect and seeing it cleave through the enemy's invariably feeble lightning defence. Faith is also generally useful for things like Heal, Great Heal and Homeward, and Wrath of the Gods is invaluable if you get surrounded by mobs (or if some laggy chain-BSer is getting on your nerves... ).


Also, in answer to your question - no, you keep your dex scaling when using resins or buffs. That's one of the major decisions of faith and int builds; use magic or divine weapons that scale directly or use a normal weapon and buff it, scaling off your talisman/catalyst.



Lastly, HA-HA! Your Yellow Sun is pathetic and watery by contrast to the might and grandeur of our Reddish-Orange Sun! However, we shall still aid and protect you, for the Sunbros are friends to all servants of sunlight... even if they do just want to get their hands on a certain "amazing chest"...

Faith is an extremely useful stat to raise. Sunlight Blade is very very good, the spears are oddly satisfying, WoG helps in PvP (no you don't have to spam it), etc.

It's very easy to dodge a spear though. You can easily notice when someone is about to use it, and since it fires in a straight line, I never found it good in PvP.

Other than PvP, it's alright with chucking them at bosses and whatnot.

It occassionally works in pvp, just today (before I lost everything) I was helping a host and his other phantom through the catacombs. We were met by an invading partial havel wearer opponent. As I was returning to my host (I went to fight some skeletons across a bridge) I noticed that the other phantom engaged the invader. The invader rushed the phantom and started spamming WOG (I think he got off around 6 of them). In order to save my host and the other phantom, who were both being flung around like rag dolls, I whipped out my greater lightning spears and hurled them at the invader, who was too busy spamming to dodge. A couple of those to the face and he was on his knees, and we luckily had no casualties.

Of course, the spears are great if the opponent is oblivious to you. I would call that cheap, but given the circumstances with him and spamming WoG, it's acceptable IMO.

In coop my goal is almost always to protect the host. But to your point, the invader was facing me while I was doing it, I have no idea why he didn't dodge, or why he didn't dodge any of the three of them I threw to beat him.

I would not call it cheap, its no different than hitting him with an arrow or a spell. everything has its use, this one shines brightest when they aren't aware of you/ can't dodge. (Also find it hypocritical you are calling another persons usage of a miracle cheap while openly using BKGA with Hornets. What do you crit at? 1500+? Enough to OHK most players)

Or you can offer 20 odd medals to the broken statue and I've only got 9, so it looks like I'm destined to be an outcast.

No you need 25 Faith - 5 Faith every time you help someone out.

Nonsense SlakeMoth, you can still become a sunbro . You need 50 faith to become a sunbro. But, every successfuly coop (with you as a phantom?) decreases that requirement by 5. So you can do 10 coops and then you would be a sunbro

Patch 1.05 lowered it to 25....
