I like to think he's playing the role of a guardian or protector of the abyss. The citizens of Ooolacile awakend prime evil man and thus began the events of the abyss spread.
actually on a off note Gough himself says that by killing manus, the spread of the abyss is delayed.
of course we cant completely blame manus. such events were constructed by the "Toothy Serpent" that chester speaks of. wether that refers to Kaathe or some other serpent were un-aware of is mystery.
