So I used to play, I'm sure some others have. I was interested in what you guys think of the old PnP game, as well if you have any interesting tales.

A few things I've found which are fairly entertaining in regards to DnD.

The Something Awful forum has Let's Play DnD. A very comedic group that tends to break the lore of the world in ways while focusing on how goofy they can make things.

The Penny Arcade DnD group. They have four seasons of Podcasts, as well as three seasons of live action.

I really want to learn it, seems very interesting. My old roommate is a D&D nut, and he used to go on and on about it.

It's an excellent game, I would play it with friends if it just wasn't so damn expensive to buy the books and get figures, etc.

That's what puts me off, it sounds like a big investment (in every sense of the word) for something that I may not like/get. :|

I'd suggest finding someone with the books already, then using a pog or something instead of a figure. That way you could experience the game and decide if you want to get into it or not.

I love it, since it's pretty much roleplaying at its most extreme.

Without the limitations of a video game, and being in an adaptive world you can try anything you want as long as the DM allows it, it doesn't break the rules, and you get a good roll.

I remember the time I skinned an Orc and turned him into a banner so that I could inspire fear in Orc enemies.

I remember my sisters 'cleric' back stabbing me, when I found a magic ring of water walking that she wanted. My brother the DM made her lose all her clerical powers till she went on a pilgrimage and paid for her sins lol

That sounds like it would have been a good chance to switch things over to an evil campaign.

Want to hear a more heroic moment?

I once got surprised and disarmed by a powerful knight. I actually managed an instant kill because the DM absolutely loved how I attacked the guy. I had been eating while attacked, so I had a spoon in hand when I reached for my sword. I swung my wooden spoon about and stabbed it into the guy's eye. With a natural twenty, he died.

My spoon was enchanted, I got it from a long quest line, and any container I put it in would fill with a low quality yet edible slop.

I flooded his head with slop killing him!

I would'nt want to eat off that spoon after that.

Sounds like the magic bowl from the 'war of powers' books. It fills up with slop when the lid was removed

Funny you make this thread, I was invited to and just participated in my first DnD session last week. Laughed my *** off, loved it. Seems if you find the right people and DM, you'll have a blast. Going to be doing it every other week now and looking forward to it.

my mom got my brothers and I hooked on AD&D. Used to play all the time. When we got older it turned into Rifts ( my glitterboy was da shiznit) and then werewolf/ vampire. We had a GM running a werewolf campaign. I was sorta losing interest in gaming but she wanted me to play. I asked if I could be a vampire somehow tied in. Put me in as a hired him to take out one of the werewolf members who had done some no-no actions. Sounds mean to the other person but remember I was one vampire in a group of wolves. Essentially I had to convince the group I was with them and take me along and wait for my chance.

I liked the level of backstory those games had. You were encouraged to write a book. Essentially my guy was in the old west and all alone. Gets turned into a vampire and tries to become super gunslinger. In order to get my weapons and gunsmthing skills where I wanted them I asked for and was approved to add character flaws which give you more points to use. I made him mute meaning I had to write to talk or use facial expressions. Had a blast. I also have him the overconfident flaw meaning he thought he was invincible. So, then he gets buried and lost for over a century, warping him a wee bit. He's found by a vampire clan and used as an assassin of sorts. If this thread keeps up I'll just have to tell the tale of how I showed off my overconfidence flaw

I've got my eye on you Mildred!

That sounds great Emerge, I wish there was a group around here.

Yeah I'd say it's best with a great group, sometimes people get too focused on loot and lose sight of the real fun to be had. Though there are times where a group of people looking out for themselves can result in some hilarious moments of betrayal which open up great dramatic options.

I'd say the group is always the deciding factor. Everyone has to be committed to their concept and willing to roll a 1 on that critical attack they're really counting on

Tolvo, your soon story is a perfect example of how fun it can be

I always remember the time I died climbing a tree because of a 1.

It was only ten feet tall, but that one man.

It inspired me to go with a Goliath Fighter.

Those Athletics rolls, even if I got a 1 I could reroll.

I got myself the long jumping skill, and the sky was the limit. Since the sky was the only place I couldn't jump to. It basically became me going, "A Minotaur appears...Is there anywhere I can jump to?"

Lol. Yeah, funny how the characters develop actual habits.

I had a similar one. My mute cowboy vampire was partly overconfident because I made sure to take a skill where he could become the earth. It's intention is that you never need to find a coffin, allowing you to camp out and survive in the wild. It also makes you hard as hell to kill. I'm losing? I can't lose. Now I'm dirt!

I remember I actually had a background based ability, it was being a gladiator. If I remember correctly it allowed me to re-position my allies if they are near enough in combat. So I could move them away while forcing a target to focus on me. It allowed for a nice little backstory too, since the Goliath were frequently captured by Giants.

I made my guy out to be someone who was a decent gladiator but led an uprising. However on the day they attempted to break free he was nowhere to be found, having figured such an action would result in his own death instead he snuck away while they tried to fight for freedom. Among the slaves he ended up being known as a betrayer and someone to kill on sight.

Plus being a Goliath, those people have tattoos across their bodies that depict their lives, entirely. From birth. So with a bit of branding to mark him as a slave, I got to add the idea of him finding his future to be full of uncertainty causing him to have great interest in figures relating to divination and healing.
