1. Go into an area where you haven't killed the boss
2. Use Eye of Death
3. This causes 3 people to be gravelorded, if they are on NG+ or above, they will see black phantoms, but no matter what NG they are on, they can still see your sign.
4. People will invade you through your sign, which changes position to match where the gravelord (you) currently are
5. Killing this invader rewards you with an eye of death. If they kill you, they get the eye and are no longer gravelorded.
6. Rinse and repeat until you are max cov level for best stuff, enjoy ruining peoples playthroughs.

All you really need to do are give "Eyes of Death" to Nito to level up in the covenant.
For PVP, you have to put down your sign and once you do this people that are affected by your sign in their world will invade. The basic reason for the invasion is because they want to get rid of the BP's in their world that your sign has brought on.
The best way to get Eyes of Death though are either by farming them from Basilisks or killing the players that invade your world once you put the gravelord sign down.

The covenant has it's uses which stand out more during challenge runs than anything else.

I think it was a poor design choice to make the level up item and the pvp item the same thing.

Use the Eye of Death and watch 3 players invade your world for a glorious gangbang. You have been warned. 
On a more serious note, i always get more invasions when i use the EoD rather than spamming the Dried Finger.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you had to use a humanity every time you wanted to invade as a darkwraith, a souvanere when you wanted to invade as a darkmoon, and a sunlight medal every time you wanted to help as a sunbro. I am also fairly certain you don't need to use a dragon scale every time you were summoned as a dragon. What game have you guys been playing?
