    How to play this build:

    1. Find a comfortable place. Draw your bow and sit tight.
    2. Shoot trespassers. If you don't think you're going to hit them with your bow, shout at them to get off your property.
    3. Backstab them during wake-up or as they're recovering from roar's hitstun. After backstabbing them, Fire Tempest them.
    4. If they are still alive, report them for hacking.

The joke is that only hackers would have enough health to survive getting hit by a Greatbow, BS'd by a dragon-roar hornet DST, and then hit by a BDCR Fire Tempest.

I've personally been using this Greatbow build, and I got to agree that using a Greatbow is great fun; landing a 500 damage shot that knocks a charging opponent down is hilarious. Sometimes the staring match can feel a bit lame, and midrolling through Dark Magic is a pain.

I must say that your way of doing it is a lot more aggressive, and, well, more exciting since you can still do stuff if the opponent has an Estoc or a Spear compared to mine. I'm a bit doubtful of the efficacy of a wake-up Tempest outside of a cancelled BS attempt since you have no poise as any hit with cancel the casting.

I've been using Greatbows almost since release and shieldpoking has always been a hassle for me. I tried using Force to get past them, but the short range and time involved in swapping weapons made it not very good. It's much faster to just cancel the bow draw with a roar, which is what inspired this build. Actually I made a build similar to this back in 1.05, which is how I found out about the dragon bow backstab.

Fire Tempest after a BS is not something I don't always go for. It's sort of dependent on position. If they land in a corner (I PvP mostly in the Burg) then I'll go for it, since I can cast it where they'll have a tough time getting out of it, and I'm too far away for them to hit me without risking getting hit by Tempest. What it's also nice for is if you trade a bow shot with some guy's attack. You can shoot them, swap out, and almost entirely cancel the hitstun, giving yourself plenty of time to cast. And of course as you mentioned, canceled BS's.

And this build isn't all that aggressive. What I most like about Greatbow builds is their ability to just sit in place and turn enemy aggression to their advantage. I really like that hyper-turtle'ish playstyle. The only time I get aggressive is if some guy just sits in place with his shield up and dodges my poison knives, in which case I'll kinda inch my way forward, then when I'm close enough I'll try to cross-up roar into a BS or something.

Also you can cancel bow draw with Silver Pendant, which I find really useful for fending off dark magic.

Something that gave this build a bit of trouble that I didn't anticipate was thorn armor. I've kinda worked my way around it, but it's pretty troublesome.

That's a very clever idea, and I wish I thought of it. The biggest problem I run into is trying to get the actual bow setup against a magic user, though now that my high poise is more of a liability, I think that will be less of an issue. How consistent are backstabs off a roar? Generally, I can't strafe in time to make to their back when I try which normally works for Wrath of the Gods for me. Is it an issue of needing to do a pivot backstab off the stagger, or is it off the guard break you pull it off?

I think Oxy ran a Dragon build with the Greatbow for a bit, though he changed up for a Composite Bow since waiting didn't really suit him. However, one thing neat he did was a Gold Tracer which he got stunlocks off the roar with, and Pep's done Furysword for the higher damage and range. It's something you might consider, though I'm willing to bet you have as it seems you have a lot more experience with Dragon builds than I do.

I don't strafe for the BS, I unlock and run directly behind them. I imagine you can also BS off a guard break, but I haven't tried it much, so I don't know how consistent it would be. Distance also matters. If they're far away, it's tougher to pull off. Overall, it's fairly consistent, though. Not perfect, but I'd say like ~80%, which is about what I get when I try to tickstab off Zweihander R1's.

I guess it's time to do some more pivot backstab training. Thanks for the tips, they seem like they'll be very helpful.

If you dead angle the roar you will push them to the side which gets their back closer to you distance and angle wise.

I bet this is one of the reason why:
With the Strength of Lords, they challenged the dragons.

    May I ask two questions?

    1. What is a "cross-up roar?"

    2. What is a "tickstab?"

Cross-up roar is where you face away from the guy and then use the Dragon Torso Stone.

Tickstab is where you hit a guy with an attack, walk around behind him, and then backstab him as soon as the hitstun ends.

Both of them are named after FG techniques. You know how much Souls PvP'ers love stealing terminology from FG's.

It's a very dangerous combo, especially with an ultra greatsword or the Flamberge. The Mura also seems to bea popular choice for tickstabs.

I just heard another term for it that I like.

Staggerstab. It just has this rolling feel to it.
