Once when I was younger, I put up a nude video of me.... It was a joke, but now that I'm older I realize how horrible it was.....

I'm not trying to, though it's tough to criticize the being offended attitude without talking about what's offending them. Tried my best to avoid the gender issue bit.SirArchmage wrote:Just commenting to say, that let us not turn this into "Gender Issues Discussion Thread 3.0".

I've actually not heard the full interview, I just stumbled across that clip while checking out some of Stephen Fry's stuff on Youtube a while back and never forgot it because it really sums up the entitlement attitude in this age, I might go and have a listen to it later.Serious_Much wrote:Steve that interview I've heard before and it's great. BTW I Googled Stephen Fry offended quote and came across this.

Just brilliant.

Frankie Boyle has lost it a bit now. His shows are just offensive without being all that funny. His time on mock the week was his best years though

So, I just quit my job, walking out in the middle of the shift.
Not quite sure who was in the right, but I'm not apologizing. I don't care, getting yelled at for filing a complaint is something that JUST. SHOULD. NOT. HAPPEN. Doesn't matter who it's complained about (A 73 year old lady), why the argument started (Who should do the garbages), or anything similar, when it's the stores face being saved (How the 73 year old started ***** AT CUSTOMERS because I DARED to ask her to take out the garbages).

Re: The "let it out" thread.
I don't know where you work and I won't pretend to know the lady, but coming from a guy who works school cafeterias with almost stereotypical "granny lunch ladies" as coworkers I can say that as a general workplace rule it's pretty inconsiderate to ask an elderly person to take out the trash or really take on any physical labor task when a more youthful, stronger person is available.Slarg232 wrote:So, I just quit my job, walking out in the middle of the shift.

Of course she shouldn't have taken it out on customers, and you have every right to file an official complaint without fear of punishment. But if you're forum age is correct and you're really 22, you shouldn't have asked a physically weaker person to take on physically-involved chore before you.
EDIT: I realize the way I worded this kind of sounds unsupportive, but I'm not sure of a better way to say that. I don't know what kind of history you two as coworkers may have had and I don't know how belligerent she ended up getting. I don't know how badly you got scolded for filing the complaint, how you acted as you filed it, and how you reacted to the scolding. For all I know your manager and coworker grossly overreacted and you were entirely justified to leave them in the dust and move on with yourself. I'm taking no sides with this post, since I obviously don't know enough details about the people involved. Just take it as general advice for the future

I would agree that me asking an older person to take out the trash (Yes, I am 22) would be inconsiderate.....
.... in a non-work environment. I'm not sorry; I was taught that if you expect to be paid, you have to do EVERYTHING the work calls for.
The whole story goes as follows:
.... in a non-work environment. I'm not sorry; I was taught that if you expect to be paid, you have to do EVERYTHING the work calls for.
The whole story goes as follows:
History wrote:
I was part of the Late Shift. We come in at 3:00 P.M. and are scheduled to get off at 11:00 P.M. Scheduled to, because in order to leave we have to complete a list that usually takes us until 1:30 A.M. to complete, due to getting things ready for in the morning. All fine and dandy, I have no problem helping the other shift.
Unfortunately, this is not true of the morning shift; They show up at 7 A.M., they get to leave ON THE DOT at 3:00 P.M. Yes, I fully admit that the Morning Shift is the busier shift (Hence why I have no complaint filling coffee, coolers, everything), but the gas station has two cash registers. Morning Shift has three people, Night shift has two.
Every single day. EVERY. GOD. DAMN. DAY. We the Night Shift workers would walk in the doors and the waters would be empty, the bathrooms unclean, the garbages overflowing, the Cooler bare minimum. And yet, every single day, 3:00 P.M. rolls around, they leave, even if the toilets are plugged and overflowing.
On a Side Note, the 73 year old and I did NOT get along in the first place; She thought I was a lazy, good for nothing slob (who will swap any* shift or do anything anyone will ask me to, within reason), while I thought she was an old, decrepit, nosy slacker who thinks her age is enough reason to go on about how I would never last a day if I worked when she first started working. So, within a frame, bad blood between me and her.
My mother and my ex-manager were/are really good friends, having recently done one of those Run or Dye marathons together. I picked up the job specifically because I heard she was having a hard time keeping people in this god forsaken town.
The Actual Incident wrote:
Ok, so I'm scheduled to work, since we are short staffed, at 2:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. Not that big a deal, it's only one more hour. I get in the door, and am immediately greeted by a third employee with a six person line in front of him and 73 off in her own world making coffee. I head back, do my Daily Check In Routine, and head up to the front. Third Guy has disappeared, 73 is up there. She asks me to take care of the garbages and change the window washer fluid that you see at every gas station at the pumps. "Oh sure, I'll take care of it." and I head out to do it.
About forty minutes later, I have the waters done, and I need to use the restroom. I walk in, look at 73, and ask her if she can take over with the garbages, as only three of them needed to be done right this minute. The response I get is straight up, one word for an answer:
"No."
I'm sitting there, thinking wait, what? And she continues,
"No, I'm not going to take out the garbages. Not while there are two young men who can do it. It ain't happening, I'm not going to do it."
Myself, still semi-stunned, quite stupidly say "Why not?"
"Because they are heavy, and I did them just the other day. You go out and do them."
A customer, an old class mate of mine actually, walks up to the counter, and 73 looks straight at her and says "Can you believe him? He wants ME to do garbages!"
Strike One, I don't care what is going on, don't drag customers into employee matters. Should be pretty standard really.
A little more back and forth goes on, which includes her saying
73-"I'm too old to be doing this sort of thing, you guys are younger and can do more than I can"
I will not lie, my temper was flared at this point
Me - "It's part of your job to do this.... I don't see how this is a problem."
73 - "I leave in ten minutes, I'm not doing something that will take me twenty."
Me - "We stay, EVERY NIGHT, three hours to get the shift ready for you guys, why is ten minutes late so much of a problem!"
73 - "Because I am not going to do it! You are younger than I am and much stronger! It's also your job to stay and get the shift ready for us, not the other way around!"
Me - "So the only way to get out of our job around here is being Old and Decrepit?"
73 - " I AM NOT OLD AND DECREPIT!"
Me - " YOU JUST SAID YOU COULDN'T DO THE JOB BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO OLD. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS."
Another customer walks up to the counter to buy cigarettes
73 - "Can you believe the nerve of this guy, he wants me to do the garbages!"
Strike 2, again, don't ***** at customers. It's poor form.
3:00 rolls around and the guy I'm working with, probably one of the two cooler people who works there, walks in the door. She starts ***** at HIM.
Strike 3, dragging people in that weren't even there for it.
Anyway, right as soon as he gets settled in, she's gone.
In-Between wrote:
So he, let's call him Jay, asks me what's going on. I give him the same recap I just posted, and he mentions several things; A) I shouldn't have let my temper flare like that (Which I agree to), B) She should NOT have pretty much said the late shift was basically the morning shifts ***** (To which I also agreed) and that C) Our Boss needed to know that she was dragging customers into the fight. I agreed, but refused to call our boss at that exact moment; I was still too angry, visibly shaking still, to where it was taking most of my will just to talk to customers in an even voice.
So at about 4:15 (I do tend to flare and cool off quickly), I call the boss to tell her I have a complaint to file. The boss gives off a sigh and asks me what happened. Again, I recap, getting to the part where I called her old and decrepit before the boss laughs into the phone and says "Alright, bye."
Right. Get treated like a second class worker by the other employee, get laughed at by the boss. That's depressing.
5:00 wrote:
So, 5:00 rolls around. Boss comes into the store, looks at me, and tells me to see her in her office when I'm done with that customer.
The exact moment, the PRECISE MOMENT I walk in, she starts with "I DON'T EVER WANT TO HEAR YOU TALK BACK TO 73, OK?!?" There was no So tell me again what happened, Ok, what actually happened, or even a Let me call 73 and get her side of the story. It was immediate, it was sudden, and it was very, very, VERY one sided.
I looked at her incredibly surprised, thinking it was going to be handled more professionally, what I got was an accusatory tone from the get go.
"Do you have ANY idea how important she is? If she quits, I have to work hours! and I do NOT want to work hours!"
"Uh, Boss-lady? No offense, but look at the schedule; you're already running on a skeleton crew. If ANYONE quits, you work hours.... And you and I have already been discussing that the hiring pool around here isn't exactly the greatest...."
"Slarg, I want you to think about what you've done. You asked a 73 year old to go take out the garbages. Would you ask your own grandma to take out the garbages?"
"My grandma's been dead for two years....."
"Ok, Slarg, YOUR MOTHER. Would you ask your own mother to take out the garbages?"
"If I was working with her? Yeah."
"You would ask your own mother to take out the garbages?"
"Yeah, because my mom, your friend, taught me that if I'm doing a job, I better be able to do the job. Same for her."
"Slarg, this is Apples and Oranges!"
"Boss-lady, You hired both the Apple and the Orange to take care of the job. If my mom said "Can you please take care of the garbage?" or said something along the lines of "My back hurts, can you take care of the garbage?" I would have said "Sure, give me a minute." But a simple "No, you go do it" is not going to cut it, especially from someone on the same pay grade as me...."
"SLARG, NEVER ASK HER TO DO THE GARBAGES AGAIN!"
BOOM! Hook, line and sinker; not only do I get yelled at by a fellow employee, but the BOSS brushes off what I'm saying and yells at me as well. Again, there was no "Let me talk to her about it", "Let me hear your side of the story", there was no PROFESSIONALISM. Boom, you're wrong, I don't want to hear it.
I took off my uniform, handed it to her, and said good day. Proceeded to walk out the door, waving to the pretty cool people I worked with.
* Except Release days or Magic Pre-releases.I come back.... wrote:Just padding a bit of my own ego here, but I realized I forgot my dinner and forgot to pay for the food I had already eaten, so I go back to the store at around 6:30, after I've had some time to cool off. I ask the mini-restaurant inside the store to grab my lunch out of the fridge; I'm not an employee, I can't go back there. All three of the workers went at once.
I talk to my friend at the till, and find out that, GUESS WHAT?!? The Boss Lady now has to work MY shift, which included the days where I worked 3:00-11:00 (Remember, usually stayed till 1:30, on bad days till 3:00 A.M.) and then again at 7:00 A.M.
Upon leaving (Didn't run into the boss), the three people from the restaurant all look at me and say "Please don't leave, dude. You make this job fun!" and one of the girls even started crying.
For me being a lazy son of a ***** who doesn't do ANYTHING, I must be doing SOMETHING right.
Oh, and by the way, I've already been offered my old job that I left before I went to college back. So unless Boss Lady gets down and begs me to come back (Would never happen, but still), I have no reason to; when EVERY store in town has "Help Wanted" posted, it's typically not a good idea to piss off employees you already have...

Re: The "let it out" thread.
The way I see it, it's only inconsiderate outside of the working place. If she decides to work at her age, she should be doing just as much as you. If she's not capable of doing so, she shouldn't be working any longer. At a working place, you should all be looked at as equals with the same capabilities. And if you're not even ready to sacrifice 10 minutes of your own time for work, you're probably not a good asset either. You quitting was probably for the better, Slarg.

Re: The "let it out" thread.
Yeah, when they turn their age into a helplessness plea as an excuse to get out of doing something that crosses the line. I'd say that even on the job you should still be mindful and willing to do the physical stuff for older employees as a courtesy, a general subset of "respect your elders" and all that. "Sure, I'll stop what I'm doing to move that full crate of stuff real quick," "Sure, I'll take stocking the storeroom instead of doing the dishes," "Sure, I'll take out the trash while you all wipe down the counters," etc. But if they don't treat it as a courtesy and see it as an obligation of you just because you're younger then that's borderline discrimination. Not the kind of people you want to be working with.
Sounds like you made the right choice. Good luck on the new job hunt Slarg

Re: The "let it out" thread.
Ain't that some **** Slarg. If she responded in even a halfway decent way rather than a simple "no" and shut you down I'd say "dude, not cool." But the others nailed it. It's a courtesy to your elders not an obligation and courtesy should command in kind.
I'm completely ok with persons not being able to complete everything well and helping each other out for the record. So in her case, I'd expect she can do all aspects of the job but am comfortable if she is more prone to avoid certain tasks that are difficult or unpleasant for her.
HOWEVER...anyone looking to "get out of" a task still needs to pull their own weight and absolutely need to appreciate the people that help them out. So similar to that idea, it sounds like you took the job as a favor to the boss since she is a friend of your mother's. She didn't honor the favor very well from the sound of it. Better luck with the next job.

Laborer. I'm the stock boy at the local Menards.
Funny thing about living in an oil state; the Oil Companies eat all the workers, so you can't even turn on the radio for fifteen minutes without hearing an ad for some company or another looking to hire someone.

Re: The "let it out" thread.
I recently had a thought that's causing me to be very conflicted and rather hard on myself internally. I feel like I behave very narcissistically, but only because I actually have very little self-confidence or sense of self-worth. Everything I do I only feel like I do so I can monitor it afterwards and judge reactions to try and gleam any kind of self-validation from it. "Did someone enjoy what I said or found it helpful? Hopefully I did something good this time..." and so on. Whatever I say or whenever I try to be helpful, I know it's really just so I can try and prove to myself I'm worth something. Everything I do I feel like I do it only for myself, but in the furthest sense of anything to do with pride or vanity and rather just to not be depressed. Now I feel selfish and am not sure how to handle things. Even with this post I just feel like I'm asking for attention rather than actually asking for help, and that thought just makes me feel worse.
