This is XBox One relevant, but I also thought it has some insight as to the future of gaming, particularly some of the monetary corporate/indie aspects we've been discussing, so I thought I'd post it here.

I mean what was that one last year everyone loved.. Journey i think? It was 2 hours long and cost £10.. That's ridiculous imo

The first playthrough, maybe. But like a certain other game we may know, there was actually way more to it. In fact, both Journey and Dark Souls have a lot in common, not the least of which was how the story really only makes sense with multiple playthroughs. I would hold Journey up as an example of the industry still doing great work.

And speaking as someone who started playing console games when each player controlled 1 pixel, I think it's come along pretty nicely so far.

The only thing I ca say to that though befowler is the fact that the first playthrough of journey being only 2 hours of good indie game time, the first playthrough of dark souls is 60-80 hours of high quality game time..

Despite that fact Dark souls only costs 4x more than the indie game. I don't get the pricing at all.

I agree with you though, even only in my lifetime games have progressed to an interesting point where visuals are so advanced they can take over a game in the form of cutscenes, QTEs and visual oriented rather than gameplay oriented gaming, which can be both a good thing and a hinderance

Slarg, that's actually a very good quote for media in general actually. Not just games, but even more notably is the way music has developed. If only 60 years ago (some people on this forum are older than that), someone played metal to an average person, they'd laugh at you at the thought that it could be popular

As Serious noted, Graphics are now better then ever. But that brings up a little problem with marketing. Now many lean on the "graphic" as an innovation to sell more, leaving other things out. Now I do like games with good graphics, but to me they are not the most important. Dark Souls 2 will be okay for PS3, at least for me, even if PC offers better graphics.

I think the gaming industry is booming. Some titles are earning loads of money (more than some movies) given the right marketing and of course others aren't; we have casualties in every industry. Unfortunately the amount of man-hours required to pump out an epic title are mahoosive and some companies seem to be folding due to the labour costs. Perhaps they need more commercial directors? Who knows.

But I believe that gaming will continue and it will continue to grow, adapt and evolve as popularity and technology dictate (maybe look to japan for the future of gaming now?) ...

The new console/home entertainment system is just an all-in-one home system which is the way evolution is taking us. Its been going that way for a while. Things like netflix and iPlayer have steered it this way too, or its an amalgamation of the needs of society. "Video killed the radio star" and streaming internet killed Blockbuster. Is gaming dying? Is gaming dying? No way! Look at Atari and cartridge games; we still play platform games but they have just evolved. The same goes for the games we are playing at this point in time... I cant wait for 3D headgear and immersion into VR!

To be honest, I wouldn't care so much about what they are doing with the Home Entertainment Systems (Which let's be honest, was all Consoles ever were silly ).

It's the Always Online, Used Game Fees (I never bought used, but my brothers and I always share games), and similar that makes me feel like gaming is dying out.

It´s all not really a problem in itself. It´s more about principal ideas.

I've said this for a loooong time.

But, so long as companies continue to inconvenience and cheat paying customers in their quest to stop piracy, the spiral goes downward.
