Recommend me an anime
Yup, it's one of those threads. I'm bored, summer has started, I have alot of time on my hands, and not enough useless media to fill it with. Recommend me anything but mecha (or popular big-name series because I've already seen most of them ).

What have you already watched?
Anime is a pretty broad term, just saying no mechas isn't much to go off of
If you're not addicted to action both Lucky Star and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya are both good ones.
Both Witchblade and Sword Art Online have a pretty nice blend of fight scenes and slower scenes.

Re: Recommend me an anime
Have you seen Wolf's Rain? I love it! It's one of my favorites (though I haven't watched many anime series myself). Reading various reviews of it, a lot of people absolutely love it, and it does nothing for some.

Re: Recommend me an anime
Perhaps not anime, but comics?
http://www.goblinscomic.com/ is a world roughly based off of the Dungeons and Dragons world. It is by far one of the best online comics I've ever read, with some of the most interesting characters and weapons I've ever seen. Can get both very hilarious and gruesomely depressing. Love it. And great watching how the author slowly advances his drawing skills.
Others include,
http://flipside.keenspot.com/
http://www.lfgcomic.com/
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php
http://www.dominic-deegan.com/
http://www.egscomics.com/
http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/
http://supernormalstep.com/
http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/
http://www.erfworld.com/
http://www.sorcery101.net/
And others that I cannot remember. Seriously, some great stuff here.

Re: Recommend me an anime
No mecha? No taste more like it.
Anyway, I recommend Black Lagoon or Katanagatari for action, Great Teacher Onizuka for comedy, Bakemonogatari is a well-written mystery/romance show, Shin Sekai Yori for a very nice dystopia/fantasy feel, Michiko&Hatchin is like a Robert Rodriguez movie in anime form and Paranoia Agent is mystery. They're all vary good series slightly outside the mainstream. But if you dislike mecha you're missing out on a lot of good things.

Too much to put down in list form off the top of my head
That said, I've generally liked all genres of anime I've seen except for mecha-based series (not without the occasional exception though ), so I saw no need to narrow it down when my interests really are "everything except most mecha."

I tried starting Darker than Black a few months back, but I got sidetracked with some other series and never finished it. I should probably try to revisit it now that I've got the time

I'll admit, mecha is a big hole in my platter of anime tastes, but I hardly think that qualifies as NO taste
Quite a bit in that list of yours though that I haven't seen (Black Lagoon, GTO, and Paranoia Agent are the only one's I've seen there ). Now I've got a pretty good base of new places to start
And as a last witty/smug remark, if I dislike it, then on a personal level am I really missing out?

No, but disliking it automatically because it has giant robots is missing out, I think.

I tried to get either trailers or at least scenes that don't show much about the anime to avoid spoilers.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventures? It's probably the best anime I've seen yet solely by virtue of covering the original manga, which is just fabulous in its own right, perfectly.

Lucky Star.
That's one that I think you will really enjoy, ONCE you watch a few episodes and get used the conversations they have.

Re: Recommend me an anime
You all are awesome, just wanna say! If I could, I'd thank everyone in the thread for maximum forum rep all around
I think I've got enough new ideas from you all to get started, but by no means stop recommending stuff. Let's just turn this into a general anime appreciation/discussion thread, why not?
(Unless someone wants to dig up and necro the old anime thread, but I'm too lazy ATM. Been up for more than 30 hours straight)

Re: Recommend me an anime
I'd recommend you Lucky Star. Also, I don't know if this would fit in with your restrictions: Guilty Crown. It has mechas, but it doesn't revolve around them that much, so I guess it is okay unless you have mechanophobia [looked the word up]; also, I have no idea which are big-names.
Also, there is Pandora Hearts, but I would recommend the manga as near the end, the anime breaks off from the manga and ends it, while the manga keeps up the story.
