Welcome, my friends, to Souls in the Dark. This is a play-by-post roleplaying game-that is, a rpg where players create and act out a character and describe what their character is and does in their posts in the thread.
Our aim in this is to create a fdeep, interesting story and a breathing, dynamic world to interact with, set in the world of Dark Souls.

    Setting:

50 years past this day, a lone knight slew Gwyn, lord of Sunlight, and ushered in the Dark, thus ending the Age of Fire. However, the Age of Dark was not immediately ushered in as was foretold; indeed, the knight, that newly crowned Dark Lord, has defied the expectations of both the servants of Fire and Dark. Lordran, reestablished as a prosperous nation, has become the capital of an ever-expanding empire where the living and undead are citizens alike, united under one banner against what they call 'lying, tyrannical gods'.
The Darksign continues to mark new undead, and the war between Lordran and those who still fight for the divinities, coupled with the death of the sun, has altered the world. Precious few hours of light and warmth grace the landscape each day, followed by an extended night. Monsters and the Fair Folk of the old, pagan religions have begun reappearing in ever-increasing strength, flowing from the fountains of mist and fog from the old, forgotten and wild places, like water from a spring, frolicking in the twilight and dark, and entire landscapes and structures appear overnight, ranging from plains to abandoned hovels to well-guarded castles in the middle of a wood. Amidst the chaos, small, undefended human settlements have been largely abandoned for walled cities and forts, save for isolated inns and remote villages in harmony with the wild. Monsters and bandits now frequent the roads, forests and weed-choked farms, preying on those few caravans and travallers that still traverse the countryside. Magic becomes ever more commonplace; the Long Night seems to have heightened the strength of it, and with the surge of creatures supply an virtually endless number of souls-provided warriors and hunters to harvest them. Indeed, with the falling of villages and cities to beasts and the armies of the Dark, many unemployed soldiers and mercenaries have turned to hunting magical beasts and looting these abandoned regions and newfound ruins, turning a greater profit than was ever possible before. Even the ecology itself has changed; plants now seem to feed off of a new energy present in moonlight,a nd many fantastical varieties sprout up, a few already being farmed.
The largest, most militaristically powerful nations still remain some semblance of order; Astora, Thorolund have risen as the only superpowers still supporting the gods, with weaker nations like Catarina aiding what support they can. Carim, now largely lead by Earl in all ways save name, plays the political game, devoting itself to neither the Fire nor Dark. Other lands, such as Balder and Berenike, have fallen into complete madness, the no-man's land brimming with maddened Hollows and peasants defending themselves with farm tools and hovels.
If ever there was a time for legends to rise, it is now. Bandits guards and adventurers alike have an unprecedented oppotounity to carve a place and name for themselves in the world. Warlords arise frequently, and the call for defenders of cities is ever present. All the ancient, 'pagan' entities have entered the fray, some seeking followers, others seeking only prey; and the fate of the world has yet to be decided as the war between Fire and Dark ensues. What are your goals? What conflict do you choose? What will you become, chasing your dreams in the dark?

    Rules:

    Adhere to all forums rules

Mark the parts of your posts that are not in-character with OoC (out-of-character) and those that are with IC. (in-character)
    Example:
OoC: Alright, thanks for clarifying that for me.
IC: Thompson wiped his brow, sighing in relief as he fell into the chair with a thud. "Thank Gwyn," he said as he picked up his tankard from the table and took a long gulp. "Thank Gwyn." His daughter was safe-for now. He lied back in his chair for a minute, then looked back up at Edward. "So, what's next, then?"

Write legibly. Posts do not have to be a masterful example of the Enlish language;, just decent.

    Be respectful towards each other.

    Adhere to the game mechanics.

    Character Creation:

To create a character for this, you need to do two things; fill out a character sheet and have an idea of the character.
Players may have up to three characters at any time. If this is your first, please start with only one for now.

    Character Sheet:

A character sheet is a list of the character's statistical information. It includes the following:

Name- the name of your character
Level- the level of your character. All player's first character starts at level 0.
Race- the race and regional ethnicity of the character
    Age-
    Gender-
    Size:
    Backstory-

    Parameters: These are your stats.

    Vitality-determines hit points
Strength-determines carrying capacity, aids in attacking with some weapons
Dexterity-determines agility, dodging, aids in attacking with some weapons
Intelligence-aids many skills, necessary for sorcery
    Faith-necessary miracles
Attunement-aids perception, allows attuning to spells
    Charisma-determines appeal to other people

    Equipment:
    Weapons:
    Clothes/Armor:
    Items:

Skills: What skills you have and to what level. These are explained in the Skills Section.

    Carrying Capacity
    Light Load:
    Medium Load:
    Heavy Load:
    Push/Drag:
    Over Head:

Feats: Characters start our with 3 feats. (these will be described later)

Spells: This will be explained later

Players start off with 7 in each parameter and have 30 points to distribute. No parameter may be above 18 at level 0. (starting level) 10 is the human average, so 7 is 70% of the average while 18 is 180%.
Note: Racial bonuses and penalties can boost abilities above or below these normal limits.

    Character Idea:

The is the ida of your character-their personality and backstory. This has virtually no limit to how in-depth it can be. Come up what they like and dislike, little habits and viewpoints that define them. Get to know them, and then roleplay that character, not yourself.
Character flaws are very important and can add depth and realism to a character. How I usually start my characters is with a very basic idea. (like a sorcerer with a greatsword, for example) Then I take an emotional issue I have and amplify it until it becomes a huge or even one of the most defining traits of the character. Then I create the story of how that character came to be that way.

    Race:

There are several races players may choose from.

Aelf- Small, pale-skinned and fair-haired pygmies born from magic, or perhaps the colorless fog. Their very essence is vague. While frail, they make for fine warriors and sorcerers.
Size: Small (+1 to AC, 1/2 carrying capacity)
Parameters: -2 Vitality, +2 Dexterity or Intelligence
    Special: Fey Bloodline

Child of Chaos- Those descended from the Witch of Izalith and her Daughters of Chaos. Intrinsically tied to Fire, they have propensity for pyromancy.
    Size: Medium
    Parameters:
    Special: Izalith Bloodline

Divine- Those descended from Lord Gwyn and his family, those within this group are too weak to be rightfully called actual gods. Even so, they retain a close link to their kin and their miraculous powers.
    Size: Medium
    Parameters: -2 Intelligence, +2 Faith
    Special: Divine Bloodline

Gargoyle- Living statues, often animated from churches. They may have any of a wide variety of features, and are physically quite strong.
Size: Small, (+ 1 AC, 1/2 capacity) Medium, or Large (-2 AC, double carrying capacity)
    Parameters: +2 Vitality, +4 Strength, -2 Dexterity, -4 Intelligence
    Special: Carved Body

Giant- A race of enormous beings that hail from Lordran. They are often devout followers of the gods and have great strength and life force.
Size: Huge (-8 AC, x4 carrying capacity)
    Parameters: +6 Vitality, +6 Strength, -2 Intelligence, -2 Dexterity
    Special: Giant Bloodline, Level +3
Note: Giants are considered 3 levels higher than normal. Special permission is required to play this race.

Human- The people of the Dark. The Dark is the very essence of humans made manifest, though most of humanity still serves Fire and the Gods. They are the middle ground in strengths and weaknesses.
There are many ethnicities of humans, indicated by the region from which they hail.
    Size: Medium
    Parameters:
Special: Dark Bloodline, any one of the following: Astoran Bloodline, Balder Bloodline, Berenike Bloodline, Carim Bloodline, Catarina Bloodline, Great Swamp Bloodline, Far East Bloodline, Thorolund Bloodline, Vinheim Dragon School Training, or Xena Bloodline.

Mindflayer- A bizzare race of octopus-headed men with psychic powers. They frequently enslave the very minds of weaker beings. Their intelligence makes them great sorcerers.
    Size: Medium
    Parameters: -4 Vitality, -2 Strength, +6 Intelligence, -2 Faith,
    Special: Illithid Bloodline

Snakemen- Snake-headed men from the swamps. Fierce and tribal, they still live in ancient customs. Their high life force suits this warrior breed well.
Size: Medium or Large (-2 AC, double carrying capacity)
Parameters: +4 Vitality, -4 Intelligence or Charisma
    Special: Manserpent Bloodline

Undead/Hollow- Humans who died and were branded with the Darksign, they now wander the earth eternally, rising again each time they die until they become Hollow and lose their sanity. They have been long persecuted by the many of the living and the Gods, both for their wildness and for their intrinsic connection to the Dark.
    Size: Medium
    Parameters:
    Special: Darksign, Dark Bloodline, Hollowfication

Skeletons- Animated skeletons, they are the ilk of Nito. Unlike Hollows, they are not reborn by the Darksign-rather, they are the result of necromancy.
Size: Small, (+1 AC, 1/2 carrying capacity) Medium, or Large (-2 AC, double carrying capacity
    Parameters:
    Special: Skeletal Body

All Special attributes of each race are described in detail in the list of Feats.

    Game Mechanics

This section details all of the game mechanics.

    Table of Contents
    Feats
    Skills
    AC and Weapons
    Spells
    Combat

    Feats

Feats are special abilities characters have that are more specific than parameters. They grant abilities or alter ones the character already has and let characters specialize. For example, a character takes the feat weapon focus. (arming sword) He then gets a bonus to attacks he makes with a longsword. A different character takes the feat Emblaze Weapon which grants them the ability to cover her sword with fire.

A catalogue of feats will be included in the supplementary thread.

    Skills

Skills are all of the various skills characters have, including everything from blacksmithing to singing, picking locks and sailing. Characters may put up to their level+3 skill points in any skill at one time. Characters start out with 12 skill points to distribute at level 0.

A catalogue of skills will be included in the supplementary thread.

AC and Weapons, DR and Damage

Weapons are tools used to attack other characters. A character makes an attack with a weapon by rolling a twenty sided die and adding and subtracting and bonuses and penalties the player has to the result of the die roll.
AC is Armor Class, which represents how hard it is to hit that character. Dexterity, armor and some magic affects this.
If a character attacks another character, if the total attack result is higher than their target's AC, the attack hits. If the result is lower, the attack misses. If the attack hits, the player rolls the damage die type of that weapon and for any special effects it has.
DR is Damage Reduction, which is granted by armor and magic. This value is subtracted from the damage an attack deals to the wearer.

    Spells

A spell is a specific magical formula to achieve a specific result. To be able to cast a spell, the character must have the required parameter value(s), the proper tools, (such as a catalyst, flame, talisman or reagents) they must have it recorded in some fashion (such as on a scroll or book) and they must attune to it.
Attuning to spell is a process by which the caster meditates on the signature energies of the spell. This time this process requires varies from spell to spell. Aside from time, this only takes a time of dedicated concentration on the spell with a record of its workings present.

A catalogue of spells will be present in the supplementary thread.

    Combat

Combat is turn-based and is meant to be fast and fluid.
There are several combinations of actions a player can take in a single round of
    combat.

Full-Attack: the character makes multiple attacks. The number is determined by the weapon.

Move and Attack: the character can make a single attack and walk, roll, and so on.

Full Move: the character spends the entire round running, walking, and so on.

    Cast Spells: varies by spell.

    Use Skill: varies.

    This, I'm guessing. https://soulswiki.forumotion.com/t22822-is-anyone-interested-in-a-dark-souls-text-based-rp

    But, then again, perhaps not.

Nope, I don't see a list there. Only discussion about the setting and the races.

    Here. https://soulswiki.forumotion.com/t22764-dark-souls-roleplay-souls-in-the-dark-catalogue-thread
The thread title names are pretty obvious.
The catalogue is far from finished. I need to get to a pc to be able to fnish it, rather than the ps3 that I'm on right now. If no one even posts that they're interested, I won't bother, though.

Alright, there's one. As soon as several people post in this thread that they'll play, I'll finish up this page and the character creation part of the catalogue.

    Heya!

~Two~ more interested players here. The other one of the two of us hasn't registered on the forums yet, but he certainly will if this game takes off.

I'll probably be looking at the supplementary thread and character creation sometime later, noticed this thread a few days ago and I've been brewing character ideas for a while now. : dd
