Restarting Demon's Souls

I've recently restarted the game so that i can record some PvP sessions with a friend of mine. But there are a couple of things i don't know since i've never tried PvP in DeS. Hopefully someone can answer them.

1. Do you have to be human to summon a red phantom?
2. Must the boss of the level be alive to get invaded similarly to DkS?
3. Do you lose a SL when you die in the host's world as a red phantom?

3. Dying because of a fatal fall while invading will result in a lost level, otherwise no.  However using the white eye stone to leave the hosts world as well as having soulsucker or banish used on you can also cause you to loose a level.

If you invade as a black phantom you DO lose an sl if killed by the host. It goes both ways. If a black phantom kills the host, the host loses an sl.
So to answer all 3 questions, yes ,yes and yes.

3. It depends if you used the Red Eye Stone or the Black Eye Stone.

Black Eye Stone - If the invading Phantom dies due to the environment (e.g. falling off a cliff, rolling ball trap in 1-x, Red Dragon in 1-2, etc) their Soul Level will decrease by one. Further, dying from either poison or plague will also cause the Black Phantom to lose a Soul Level.

Red Eye Stone - Unlike the Black Eye Stone, the host or any supporting Blue Phantoms will lose a single Soul Level if killed by the Black Phantom, and vice versa.

Great, thanks for the feedback. However, more questions popped up that i need some answers to as well.
Say i'm SL125 or SL150 as a host, what SL range of a red will i be able to summon?
