If any of you guys have kids
If they are lil gamers in ten years their retro games and childhood games will be full 1080p HD. What was your favorite childhood game ?

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, if I remember correctly.
I might add more to that. But for now I'm going to bed.

No game yet has matched the pure excitement of smashing square balloons with your face.

Re: If any of you guys have kids
I think Bionic Commando NES was my favorite when I was a kid. I was a big fan of the NES Megaman games too. I still revisit them on occasion.
I was so stoked to see Rearmed come out when I got my PS3. The non-remake next gen Bionic Commando is awesome too. Gets no love at all, but it's so much fun.
Simon's Quest would be up there for me too. It had a few really brutal puzzles that it didn't hold your hand for hardly at all. Plus Castlevania music and sound design, which has always been good, and good solid gameplay. So much to love there.

Re: If any of you guys have kids
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project, for the NES. I have fond memories of going over to an uncle's house and rocking that game with my cousin. Man, what a shot of nostalgia... I was about 6 at the time, and I'm 19 now. Also, anybody remember Shadowrun for the SNES? that game confused the crap out of me as a kid, but now I really want to own it in cartridge form. x)

I just saw an ad for the remastered version on Steam. It looks great. I have fond memories of that one myself.

Micro Maniacs is one that spring to mind for the PS1. A sister game of the very popular Micro Machines

Re: If any of you guys have kids
I used to know a guy that could play the first 5 tracks of RC Pro-Am with his eyes closed. I forgot all about that game. Worst ending ever. It got SOOO hard by the time you cycled to the sports cars, and then finally finished, and the only thing that happens at the end is it starts you over at the first track again. I don't even think they give you a congratulations.

Re: If any of you guys have kids
Video games didn't exist when I was a kid and most people didn't even have a TV. In fact we didn't get a TV until 1956 and even then it was only in black and white because colour TV hadn't been invented! I didn't start playing video games until 1993 at the tender age of 47. My first console was a Sega Mega Drive (which I still have) and the first game I played was, unremarkably, Sonic the Hedgehog 1. I've always had a soft spot for good old Sonic. Things have changed a bit since then and so have I of course.

I've been trying to find a copy of Freelancer recently. I'd heard it was a good follow up to the Wing Commander series, which I've been craving since I ran through WC.

Even though I am only 15 I remember most of the games that everyone has listed in here except the Atari Games of course.
My Favorite game from my child hood has to be: Ape Escape.

I managed to beat this as a freaking 6 year old. I guess it's why I find myself playing bullet hells every now and then. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were also huge contenders after I got a little older. During the advent of the N64 though I mostly played Mario Kart, Mario Party, Hey You Pikachu, and smash bros.

Re: If any of you guys have kids
Super Mario Kart
Mario Kart 64
Super Bomberman (I was unstoppable at this game, routinely beating high schoolers in 4th grade)
Atomic Bomberman (Haha! Now with 10 guys!)
Chrono Trigger
Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past
ToeJam and Earl (one of the all time greats), it's been forever since I didn't make it to funkatron!
Super Mario World - Had a crowd watching me play this at a college party once, too. Odd. I swept the bonus stages like nothing, gogo many-year-old muscle memory .
Warlords II
Warlords III (two of the best turn-based strategy games ever made outright, especially III)
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Warcraft II
StarCraft
Bubble Bobble
Megaman 3
Secret of Mana
Turtles in Time (My toe! My toe! My toe!)
These are the ones I really played a lot during the period where I could still be somewhat classified as a kid (highschool and before). Some of them I just enjoyed. Others, like bomberman and Mario kart, I got to the point of being absolutely brutal and my friends wouldn't play me in them anymore because they could never, ever win. This was pre-internet days, so if your local opposition dried up...well.
Somewhat amusingly, I had to bargain with my sister to get her to play back then, but she grew up into a strong gamer herself (she's beaten both souls titles). She remains the only person to have ever beaten me in a Mario Kart 64 grand prix, and the way it happened is still amazing to me to this day.

I played a **** ton of sega games, Golden Axe (all of them), Two Crude Dudes (lol), Streets of Rage, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, some flying ninja squirrel...
For games not by Sega, Gex, Ignition, Midtown Madness 2, Freedom Fighters...
These are the games i actually played the most when i was younger, way before Freelancer
