Re: There's more to them
There's a good amount of discussion in Emergence's Linking Lore thread about Ciaran from in game facts similar to what's done here. Since the game has sparse details though it's more speculative than the speculators typically speculate in speculation topics at their speculating best.

Crestfallen Merchant
So I just started playing Dark Souls again and while doing Sen's Fortress I went to the Crestfallen merchant and talked to him. After a few lines and comeing back to him I more and more started to believe that he is infact Knight King Rendal, A few things point to this.
First of his name Crestfallen, Crest implying he was once a knight haveing his own coat of arm. Fallen meaning he abandond it either by failing or maybe because of something else lots of reasons to take here.
Secondly he sells the Balder armor which is the armor for the knight from Balder home of Knight king Rendal.
He also tells you that the two great warriors Rendal and Tarkus and also the Mage Logan has all tried and failed reaching Anor Londo through Sen's Fortress so what chance do you have? In this case he names Rendal first (people often name themselves first) he also tells as if he was there.
He is positioned very close to the top and is wearing the full Balder armor set (but a nicer looking one).
He act's very shocked when you have reached Anor Londo almost not believing it is possible that anyone could make it if Rendal, Tarkus and Logan failed.
Rendal's corpse nor gear is ever found which is from what I know always done when the Npc has died in some way.
He tells how he alone challenged Sen's Fortress but that he was driven by conceit to reach Anor Londo (this might be the reason he became crestfallen).
When you attack him he draws the same shield and weapon as the Balder Knight's uses.
So the biggest reason I believe he is Rendal is that he only mentions three hero's have tried to tackle Sen's Fortress but failed. He tried alone which no normal knight should try. He wears and uses Balder gear + Sells it. He and Tarkus are both found at the top, and how could some unknown person get so far if even Logan could'nt?
PS: Not sure if this has all been mentioned before. Also in all the earlier cases in the game a person who is dead can not be summoned in the game for instance Solaire can not be summoned at gwyn if killed or gone mad earlier. Further more in alot of cases the Npcs dont go forward untill you open the way but they often somehow manage to get ahead of you even if your moving forward all the time. Therefore I think that Tarkus never got into Anor Londo before you the player do since Crestfallen Merchant say's he failed and his sign is active for summoning for the boss fight (meaning he should still be alive). My theory is that he went into Anor Londo after you the player open the way and then died while fighting the painting guards, maybe by tripping or being pushed onto the chandilair and getting impailed or simly by being overwhelmed and killed. Fighting with heavy armor and heavy weapons in that small space should be very tough.

Re: There's more to them
Firstly welcome to the forums!
Secondly comes the rebuttals.
Crestfallen is a name given to him by the players. Just like the crestfallen warrior is represents his depression. Nothing symbolic.
Why is he wearing steel armour if he's from Balder? There are plenty of dead human balder knights around, he simply looted their corpses.
He was likely one of those who followed Tarkus and Berenike through Sen's and failed, or attempted it himself and failed.
He's at the to wearing steel armour, not balder.
I don't remember him ever saying him anything different when you reach anor londo. Can you quote him?
Rendel may be the soul of a hero corpse.
Rendel came with his army, not alone.
Probably looted from corpses.
Plenty of people tried solo. Logan did, Oscar did and you do. Logan failed on purpose. If you havent read his section (its in the third post) you should sdo so now.

First of thank you for the welcome.
Seems I was sorely mistaken on the armor and talk front thought I rememberd right on the amor must be something wrong with my eye sight also the talk I thought I rememberd from earlier playthroughs was wrong aswell.
On the part of his name I dont quite understand how you can say the player give's him the name and imply it has nothing to do with crest's but instead depression? oO
Further more where on earth did you guys find info that Rendal tried to conquer Sen's Fortress with his army?
Cant find any info on that Logan was caught willingly only that he should have managed to get through Sen's but got caught instead. Logan being Logan he could have just been careless and got caught.

Re: There's more to them
crest·fall·en
adjective
1.
dejected; dispirited; discouraged.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/crestfallen
He is only alled the cresttfallen merchant because the players named him that, just like the crestfallen warrior.
"The knights of the ancient kingdom of Balder wielded these rock-solid, long swords which are excellent for thrust attacks."
"Balder was the home of Knight King Rendal, but the kingdom was reduced to ruins after a widespread outbreak of Undead."
The language implies the kingdom fell into undeath rapidly. It is unlikely that each balder knight you see ventured into Sen's fortress solo, much more likely they attempted it as a group.
"Well the link is in the serpent guards. We know Logan wanted to reach
Seath and learn from him, what if he got himself captured on purpose? If
he was captured by the snake men they may take him to Seath themselves,
thus fulfilling his goals. Of course this didn’t turn out; he simply
gets stuck in the cage until he is rescued."

Re: There's more to them
Well the Crestfallen Warrior is called that because of a line of dialogue he has, if you attack him he says "I may be crestfallen but I'll still put up a fight". The merchant is called crestfallen because he is similarly depressed and the game provides no name so he needed one.

The warrior will also say "I'm simply crestfallen." in his dialogue if you speak to him at the right time.

By the way you should really update the Cirian thread on the lore about her relation to groups that are in the old content Viral. You are basically missing all the spoilers.
