Museum of Souls (Players) - Page 9 Empty Re: Museum of Souls (Players)

Post by SlakeMoth Mon Jul 09, 2012 5:47 am

The following were originally posted on another thread in the Dark Souls topic section & someone suggested that I posted them on here. I don't claim that they have any literary merit apart from the fact that they're relatively short & sweet.

'When Ornstein & Smough a-hunting do go

You'd better watch out for your souls.

Orn's as fleet as a deer, lighning sparks from his spear

While Smough fills your armour with holes.'

    ____

    'The Lady Priscilla is winsome,

    The Lady Priscilla is sweet,

    The Lady Priscilla's a killer

With a tail and invisible feet.'

    ___

'There is a place beneath the earth that burns with liquid fire

The Demon Guardian of the way, his aspect it is dire,

He'll blast you with his Demon Axe to put you in your place

And then, to make sure you are dead,

    He'll sit upon your face!

Oh Firesage! Oh Firesage! Please let me swiftly go!

I promise I wont hinder you or step upon your toe!'

    ____

    'For healing your festers

    An Estus is bestus'

    ____

'It was a dark and lonely road whereon I met a knight

Whose armour had a reddish cast in the waning light.

'Come travel with me friend' said I, for company I lack'

I offered him a friendly hand

But he stabbed me in the back!

The moral of this story is

    Beware when you are travelling

And meet another on the path

    It could be your unravelling.'

    ___

'There is a dragon on a bridge, his aspect it is dire,

Don't try and poke him with your sword

He'll set your pants on fire!'

    ____

'Good evening' said the man in tights when we met on the forest path

'Good evening' said I but the glint in his eye made me think that I'd better turn back.

So I spun on my heel but still I could feel

The hairs on my head were a-prickle

So I started to run but I knew I was done

When his implement made my blood trickle.'

    ____

'Lament for Sif. - Version 1.

'Oh lordly Sif, if but I knew that I would be the end of you.

I didn't want to cause you pain, I hate myself, I've nought to gain

But sad regret & sorrow deep

I pray the Lord your soul to keep'

    ____

'Lament for Sif. - Version 2.

'Oh lordly Sif, if I but knew that I would be the end of you.

I did not want to cause you pain, so I your soul could take

But sorrow deep still haunts my dreams

    And lingers when I wake.............'

Amos, really like the blending of styles in this one. It's hard to place this in any genre but it works quite well. On a related note, you do know that breathing on occasion is a good idea right? I had an asthma attack out of sympathy for your lungs in that last minute.

I feel like I should comment more on Slake's since she added a large number at once. But really they speak for themselves. My only real thought that's worth a darn is to say that I love how a few of these suggest a whimsical cadence for grim topics which is always a nice contrast. If anyone's read it, the best comparison is to the Gashlycrumb Tinies.

Basically it's just an alphabet primer and reads (structurally speaking) exactly like any primer or children's book. And then the comparisons stop......

When I first read this I was a little miffed, an alphabet primer indeed. But then I clicked on the link and was blown away. I WANT THIS BOOK! Thanks Skare, I'm truly flattered.

You wont believe this but I already own something by this artist. I thought the style was familiar. It's called The Fantod Pack. It's a set of cards, a bit like the Tarot, only instead of laying them out in a spread, you're supposed to throw them up in the air and see how they land, totally mad.

I looked for the Gashlycrumb Tinies on Amazon but it wasn't there. However, they do have 'The Epiplectic Bicycle' by Gorey, so I ordered it right away. Thanks again Skare. Oh and by the way there are a few more verses in the pipeline but I don't want to overdo it. Will post them sometime.

Lol. That's why I added the link. Didn't want to diminish your work. Surprised Amazon didn't have this. My sister bought me a copy about ten years ago, not sure where. It's one of my favorite all time works. Will have to look for those cards.

It seems a mite superfluous and troublesome to me.

You see the one I need to hack is sited in the middle

I know I'll get it one fine day, but

    It is an awful fiddle.'

The skeleton babies wont give it to me.

I hack and I slash and they lay down and die

I find that many may take offensive for you trying to find humanity by killing babies, however I have done that many times for the easy streak of souls and not having to respawn them and travel much.

Please, these things entertain me... We may make you into a mother goose yet Slake.

Well, it's part of the game Acidic and everyone on here knows that if they've got that far and it's the game I'm writing verse about. I'm not advocating the desecration of corpses in the real world.

I'm not sure I understand the 'Mother Goose' connection either, unless it's got something to do with golden eggs, but I'm glad I'm entertaining you to some degree. Thanks.

Isn't mother goose the goose that is known for the book of all the children rhymes... Or, is that something else? The golden egg works too, but I think that bird would be called 'The Goose that lays the Golden Eggs), which if I remember correctly two exist: one in beanstalk, one with a farmer and wife who later dissect the goose to see if her insides were gold... If I remember correctly.

Ah yes you are correct. I see where you're coming from now. You are equating my simple verse with nursery rhymes. Quite right too. I take it as a compliment. After all, many people remember nursery rhymes when they are well past childhood. They last which is more than can be said for some of the more esoteric literature. Also nursery rhymes and fairy tales have a dark undercurrent. Scratch the surface and there is always something nasty lurking in the depths.

    MORE SIMPLE VERSE>

    NITO.

Oh Nito you look so neato

    Snoozin' in your grotto

I really wish you'd carry on

It would help me a loto

'Cos then I wouldn't have to creep

    And stumble through the gloom

So please do me a favour fiend

    Keep slumbering in your tomb.

    _____

    The Channeler.

    The Channeler's a merry soul

    He does a little dance

So all the crystal ghouls nearby will have a better chance

To hack & slash & pummel me and bend me to their will,

Which isn't really fair you know,

    Please Channeler STAND STILL!

    _____

    The Four Kings.

    One and one is two

    Two and two is four

    Four and four make eight

    Can't cope with any more!

    _____

    The Gaping Dragon.

Down in the Depths there's a dragon

That crawls out onto the floor,

    It's slow and not fit

Which should help you a bit

But beware of it's massive maw,

Because this is the end that is killing

    And it isn't terribly thrilling

    When the poison it spits

    Leaves your armour in bits

And you mangled up in it's craw.

Just so long as I don't have to write poetry about Royal Weddings on demand. Anyways, doesn't the Poet Laureate get free booze? I'm sure I read somewhere that he/she gets a barrel of sherry as one of the perks. I'll be watching out for a delivery van from now on.
