Bartok Azhire was a warrior. He reckons there was likely not a finer warrior in the entire world. His entire life he had lived by the axe and for the axe, and he was happy. His first Axe had always been his favorite, he had cut a tree down with it, prepared chickens for dinner, and eventually went to war with it. Sadly the military was strict with equipment specifications, and confiscated Bartok's axe, replacing it with their own military grade battle axe, as well as their own soldier's style armor. Bartok begrudgingly used the armor, and they ventured off to The Parish, where they were preparing to assault the religious cult led by the Priests of Seath the Scaleless. Yet the fight was hopeless, and he watched as one by one his fellow men went hollow, and turned against him. At this time, Bartok retreated, but planning his route improperly, he was captured by the unplauged, whom exiled him to the Asylums.

Bartok thought he would go insane, pacing in the cell he had been left in left him feeling very dulled and stricken with boredom. Finally, he found a key and after a short period of time, worked his way through the Asylum to depart, but not before having a funny little man claim he was the final hope for the entire world. This left him thinking of how this could really be true, but then he discarded it as a soothsayers prophecy, and instead went along his merry way. He was intent on making it back to the Parish, so he could finally make the Religious Cult pay for what it had done to his friends and fellow soldiers...

Bartok wasn't going to lie to himself, the journey took more out of him then he wished it would have. Being half dead isn't very fun. Fortunately a man at the Firelink shrine pointed him towards a nearby well... where he could do... inhumane things to others, and thusforth reclaim his humanity. Bartok finally understood that in the world he now stood in, a victory in the arena was worth 20 on the field. He had faith in his abilities in combat, and so after making a few shady deals with the spirit of the box, it begrudgingly presented him with a bag of small red orbs. He asked what was required of him to keep this gift, and was promptly informed he must share the boxes warmth with everyone he met.

And so he vowed he would.

On his journey to the Parish, he mapped that his route would require the taming of both a dragon and a demon. Back in his LARPing days, he used to play a game called Demons and Dragons... maybe. He wasn't sure, but that sounds about right, and if it's not a game, it damn well better be. He fought his way through the Burgs, fighting through his own reserve troops from the battle with the Religious Cult. When he finally found the demon, he saw clutched in it's hands a very familiar axe... an axe he loved completely. -his- axe. He vowed to pry it from the demons hands, and so he would... Unfortunately it was massively degraded, and he knew it would take quite some tome, and expert craftsmanship to bring it back up to shape.

Spartacus has no story has no legend, he was born in the arena, and he shall die in the arena, but not before the sands have been stained with the blood of a 1000 warriors

Overhead the dragon he had heard much of roared into battle, lighting much of the bridge on fire, singing his eyebrows. To his disbelief, he discovered this was one game he did not want to play, and so instead, he ran. The dragon did not seem all too interested in following him, and so presumably his journey to the Parish could continue un-disturbed. Upon arriving in the Parish, he met a blacksmith who knew a bit about weaponry, and so after making him gather some scrap metal, the blacksmith went to work on returning his axe to it's former glory. Unfortunately, the blacksmiths fire burned not nearly bright enough, and he could only return some of the metals shine to it's surface, sufficing that it would have to do, he went to go embrace the torrents of the cult at The Parish.

The battles were fierce here, but this was the first time he had seen other sentient beings... these red specters of other warriors across time came to torment him, and slowly he would whittle them down until they perished... but he was left wanting more. This was when he remembered the bag of orbs he had looted out of a bottomless chest a shady merchant had sold him. After a bit of experimentation, it whisked him to a new world... remembering the oath to share the boxes wealth, he dropped gifts for each person before battling them in the 12 by 12 box that would soon become his Arena. This is how Bartok started his path to become a Gladiator, he started on a bottom tier with weaker prey, but as he became more confident in his weapons capabilities, he worked harder on finding better opposition, soon fighting off 2 to 3 fighters at once, until he was finally able to move on to larger obstacles. Bartok soon concluded the quest the soothsayer begged him to impart on could only be a quest to find out all he could about Gladiator combat, and to spread the word to others.

Caius Iulius Vulpa "the Fox of the Arena"

Iulius was a man who lived in the port city of Pentos on the Barbatian Coast who ran a vast network of information brokers who provided the local nobility with information from a vast variety fo sources.

However one fateful day the city of Pentos was sacked by Attican Pirates operating out of the Delos Peninsula, and the lord of the city was capture and ransomed back to city at the cost of most of the city's wealth. Enraged at the loss of his honour the Lord burned Iulius villa to the ground and enslaved his family ordering his soldier to do unspeakable things to them.

After a month of this kind of torment Iulius was a broken man, unresponsive, dead eyes would stare out the bars of his prison cell as the screams of his wife and daughters broke his mind again and again.

Finally his family was put to death and Iulius was enslaved and thrown into Pentos underworld arena The Maw. The first few fights passed in a blur of blades and violence and many combatants saw Iulius unwilling to fight, instead choosing to pummel the frail looking man with their fists.

Years passed and still Iulius was locked away, his lords new found honour preventing him from putting him to death.

However it soon dawned on Iulius, whose mind had come back from the brink only to find himself in total dispair, that in service to the lord he could buy his way to freedom and from there have his revenge.

The next day he begged the slave master to send him into the Maw for the token slave massacre. The master consented and armed him wiith a basic round shield and a long hafted spear.

That night the roar of the crown drowned out the crash of metal on metal and the striking of leather shields on oiled bodies. Iulius fought like a man possessed, and he was, the spirit of Vesta, goddess of the hopeful, enering him and strenghtnening his arm. He slew the four heavily armed gladiators with a series of thrusts and sweeping blows from his Pike.

That night he was to dine with the lord who seemed in high spirits, and drunk himself into a stupor in a fit of bacchenalian madness, leaving Iulius with a sharp blade and a druken lord. Iulius succumned to his hate and killed the bastard who ordered the horrific treatment of his daughters.

On the run for his crimes he sought refuge in a Gladiatorial Menagerie travelling from city to city. During his time there he toughened himself earning ,through the rigours of combat, a lean and strong body, his scars worn proudly as a badge of honour, his eyes brigthened at the thought of combat.

While he was a skillful spear man, following on the footsteps of the mythical champion of Vesta, whose spear and roundshield felled a thousand thousand of her enemies in a single battle, his mind was his most powerful tool which he put to good use as a tactician.

He earnt the title of Vulpa, or "the Fox of the Arena" for his masterfully command of his allies during a mock battle of the "Inavsion of Sytheria", wherein his troops numbering 29 held off a force of four score trained soldiers.

His rise to fame was meteoric though he did not come through it without making enemies.

Lol thats the first part. More tommorow. Next he'll become a prize for the women of the courts, fall in love with a lords woman, challenge that lord to a duel, become a lord, be assassinated, return to the arena, and finally join you guys as a Hopo-something ( I know the greek hopolite but not the roman version).

Okay - now that everyone is starting to share their stories, I guess I will myself - I am Oenomaus. This is my Story.

Oenomaus was born in the wrong place, with the wrong colour skin - he was persecuted in every way - he generally didn't respond due to his naturally reserved nature.
Then that day came, the day he was given a choice by his master - Lautrec - "You can die, or you can live - bask in the glory of our arena - worm".
Oenomaus instinctively said "Yes" - His first Arena battle was against a man known as Gannicus - they traded swipe for swipe, the only thing keeping Gannicus alive was his lust for glory - Oenomaus on the other hand had nothing to live for - Lautrec had put his children - wife - and even his beloved sister to death. The battle seemed to last an age, Gannicus' onslaught was relentless - How did Oenomaus have a chance against this God of the Arena - it hardly seemed fair. Always a cunning person Oenomaus realised the arena was made of sand and the wind was coming from behind him - he ducked under the slash that would have decapitated him grasping a clump of dirt.
Gannicus now ridden with dirt in his eyes could not see Oenomaus - he had to rely on his hearing - which was distorted by the cheers of the crowd. Oenomaus slamming his hilt on the back of Gannicus' head awaited Lautrec's choice.
    Death.
Refusing to put his opponent to death he was lashed 100 times - this was unpleasant but at least the man whom he now knew as Gannicus was still alive.
In those months that came to pass Gannicus and Oenomaus became comrades and good friends - Oenomaus started adapting to this gladiatorial life and started thinking about there was a chance if he was to defeat 50 more gladiators that he would be given 1000 Denarii, Enough to leave this squalor ridden place.
Unaware of the difficulties that he would come to face Oenomaus stayed reserved - he refused to use any of the female slaves - he let his feelings about Gannicus using them build up - until...
At the peak of his prowess, he was chosen to fight the most fearsome gladiator of the age, Theokoles the Shadow of Death in the city of Catarina. However, this opponent proved too much for even Oenomaus' considerable skill, and he received near mortal wounds at the giant's hands. However, he survived longer than any other opponent to face Theokoles, which the spectators counted as a victory and allowed him to live.
Oenomaus spent a year in recovery from his wounds he suffered from Theokoles in Pompeii. Before he could return to the sands, he was elevated to the position of Doctore by his master, a fact which caused the current Doctore - Opious - to challenge Oenomaus to a fight and be killed in self-defense. As he was dying, he told Oenomaus that he had taught him well.
Oenomaus was hesitant about using his whip or having a commanding presence, but would grow into the role over the course of a few months. The first Gladiator branded under his watch, Crixus, would one day become Champion of Carim.
Again there would be a match against The Shadow of Death - this time he would not be alone - Oenomaus had a choice of which gladiator to fight alongside him - he chose of course his arrogant friend Gannicus.
When they faced the giant in arena, Gannicus' arrogance leads him to be bested and wounded in nearly the same way as Doctore was, and it is only by the efforts of Oenomaus, and Gannicus' last feeble stand that the giant is killed, athough Gannicus nearly dies from his wounds.
On the eve of Lautrec's celebration for receiving patronage from Arstor Glaber, Doctore watches as the Carim guards abuse his fellow gladiators needlessly. He brings the matter to Arstor, who dismisses it. He then questions Aurelia's murder and Ashur's involvement, and Arstor dismisses that also, lying that Aurelia disobeyed his orders. Arstor then announces that those matters will soon be Doctore's responsiblity, as Arstor has prepared documents to free Doctore and hand the ludus over to him, and he calls Doctore by his real name: Oenomaus. He then leaves to give Gannicus notice that he will fight to the death with Oenomaus at Lautrec's celebration.
At the celebration, Arstor observes the deathmatch between Oenomaus and Gannicus. He notices something is off as Gannicus motions toward Oenomaus, the latter of which leaps off the shield and onto the balcony of the Villa, killing Arstor.
Oenomaus enraged chases Lautrec down to the gladiators' baths and confronts him regarding his lies about Aurelia's fate. A brief duel ensues and Oenomaus emerges victorious as Lautrec pleads for a honorable death. Granting his last wish, Doctore prepares for the killing strike just as Lautrec whips around and stabs him in the leg, fleeing immediately after. Oenomaus chases Lautrec to the courtyard, but misses him hiding under Carim corpses.
Having forsaken his title of Doctore, Oenomaus abandons the other slaves and wanders Carim in disguise, and takes to watching the continued games in the arena. However, with both the houses of Arstor and Lautrec no longer providing gladiators for the crowd to watch, the games are pathetic in comparison to those of previous years.
With nothing left to live for, he willingly returns to "the only place left for an animal without honor": The Pit. He applies the white face-paint once used to humiliate him, and begins fighting any opponent that will face him (under the alias Addonexus), hoping to be killed eventually. His first opponent - Liberius - wounds him in the shoulder, but Oenomaus is victorious. Not only is he victorious, but he requests to be pitted against more fighters. He continues to battle opponents, until one - Caratacus - nearly beats him to death with a hammer. Before he can finish Oenomaus off, however, Catatacus is killed by Lautrec, as he leaps into the arena to capture his former Doctore in his weakened condition.
After capture, Oenomaus goes through painful torture at his hands in hopes of breaking him and making him give up Gannicus' location. However, this does not work and a tired Lautrec attempts to kill Oenomaus out of frustration.
After much waiting, Oenomaus, Crixus, and Rhaskos are presented in the arena for execution, with their hands and legs chained and each armed with a single, blunt sword. They realise that the "fight" to come is but a show: they have been given inferior weapons to further remove any chance of survival.
They are shocked to discover that Gannicus has been recruited to fight among the opposing gladiators. When Rhaskos asks why Gannicus would do such a thing, Oenomaus answers by saying that he is a man without honour.
Gannicus awkwardly greets his former brother, and Oenomaus asks him if the rumors about what he has done are true. Gannicus hesistates to answer, and Oenomaus, believing this to be a yes, ferociously attacks in response, beginning the games. Gannicus and Oenomaus focus solely on each other, unaware that the other gladiators are secretly in the arena. They appear evenly matched, but Gannicus manages to overpower Oenomaus due to the latter's weakened condition and constraints. Gannicus prepares to kill Oenomaus, but at that moment, the gladiators bring down the arena, and a canopy collapses over the two.
After conflicts have subsided, Oenomaus begins to train the Germans and other rebels in the ways of the gladiator at their temple base. Eventually he and Gannicus and paired up against Crixus and Agron in a test of contest. The duo then cooperate together and easily best their opponents and thus establishing a sliver of trust and brotherhood back between the two.
When Lautrec and his men attack the gladiator rebel stronghold, Oenamaus proves a formidiable opponent in the fighting. By choice he remains at the temple while the other gladiators use guerilla tactics to weaken the Carim forces before they arrive. When the initial wave of troops breach the wall, Oenamaus fells many of them with relative ease, despite still recovering from his injuries and being without his preferred weapons. Later, when the temple is under seige by Lautrec's machines and the walls are ruined, Oenamaus finds no match in the Carims until he faces the Astoran. Armed with a single sword against the Astoran's dual daggers, the two clash for an extended period. While they appear to be evenly matched for the duration of the vicious contest, the Astoran eventually bests him by stabbing him through the hand with one of his blades, and then through the eye with a final push. Then, twisting his penetrated dagger, the Astoran rends Oenamaus' left eye, destroying it in the process. Luckily for the former Doctore, Gannicus, seeing his friend in peril, kicks the Astoran to the ground and supports the wounded Oenomaus through the tunnels and to safety. Oenomaus would later recover to the point that he can do battle.
Once again he finds himself doing battle together with his fellow brothers against Carim soldiers. Although not nearly at full strength and badly wounded from battles in the Pit, torture, the fall of the arena and his previous encounter with the Astoran, he easily kills several soldiers. Gannicus, spotting the Astoran enages him with haste. Although displaying a valiant effort he is quickly overpowered and knocked to the ground. As the Astoran motions to deal a crippling blow, Oenomaus intervenes saving Gannicus' life.
Oenomaus delivers a grave wound to the Astoran's lower abdomen and knocks him down with a powerful punch, remarking, "I owe you pain." He then hastens to the aid of Gannicus and helps him to his feet. Together they deal many more blows to the Carim warriors. The Astoran recovers and recieves two more wounds; one across the chest by Oenomaus the other in the arm by Gannicus. The Astoran parries an attack by Oenomaus knocking him aside.Gannicus attacks and recieves a fatal stab through his torso.
The Astoran, seriously wounded with a lowered guard is attacked by an enraged Oenomaus. Althouth the Astoran makes a few parries he is quickly overwhelmed and and brutally killed when Oenomaus rends apart his skull, killing him instantly.

That is my story to this day. I will continue to rip holes in the lines of the uncouth Astoran Bastards!

Many of my favourite quotes from Oenomaus:
"A gladiator does not fear death. He embraces it, caresses it, F**ks it."
"Forget everything you learned outside these walls, for that is the world of men. We are more. We are gladiators! Study, train, bleed, and one day your name will be legend, spoken in hushed whispers, feared by all."
"Never lose focus! Not if Gwyn himself were to rip open the heavens, and dangle his C**k from the skies! A gladiator's first distraction is his last!"
"A man is never too weak or too wounded to fight, as long as the cause is greater than his own life"
    "I owe you pain !"
    "HAVE YOU LOST F**KING MIND!?"

I wish to join the ranks of your brotherhood Doctore! My gladiator is a samnite but this may be altered as I conquer the old gods. I may change the items if you wish but my current armament is a gladius, leather shield, leggings of balder, the iron bracelets of solaire (he died a warriors death Gods of The Arena ( Player Made Covenant ) - Page 2 3149687655 ), and the helm of the gargoyle (a most noble trophy indeed!).
