internet confusion

would anyone care to explain where the whole troll thing, and even flame wars came from i mean i know what they are but the reasoning behind the naming of these things is confusing as hell

I'm actually much more respectful to people on these forums than I am in real life. It also seems like most of the people here are infinitely more mature than most other places on the net. I interact appropriately with people I respect, and those are few and far between.

As to the trolling part, I think partially they want attention and partially they just enjoy laughing at angry people (it's quite a lot of fun, though I don't troll).

I think they're called trolls 'coz they fish for reactions.

It is based off of the offensive brutish nature of Trolls. Most trolls do their best to bait people with offensive remarks to anger others. Where as in certain lore and myth, Trolls were large idiotic creatures that had no morals and were offensive creatures.

Thus the name troll applied, since they are the same being just in two different settings.

But I put so much thought into trolling for reactions (I guess that's trawling), but still... how could you crush my dreams like this?

There is a bit of a difference, personally. There is Avant Garde, and there is flat out retarded.

Making a remark that causes a person to question their morals and angers them since they can't comprehend something outside of their personal reality, smart move.

Going onto a Michael Jackson fan website and going, "Lol, the pedo is dead jackasses!" That's just stupid.

The skillful ones are generally funny while the others are annoying. AAlthough I found the wole mormon magnets things quite a laugh.

I just confuse people. Or I just make them stop talking about a subject. Either way.

i dotn think ive ever trolled, ive been nasty but ben very clever about it so they wouldnt realise until about a week later lol

Speak for yourself, I don't appreciate being caught up in your sweeping generalities.

It could also come from the term "trolling". Which, in fishing, when you go trolling, you put out multiple lines with "bait" on the end to catch fish. The trolling part comes from slowly moving the boat, which moves the lines, and fish bite at the live bait.

So, here they would be trolling for a response or a reaction.

This one sounds a bit more likely as an originator for the word.
