    Greetins'.

My name is EWGF, or E-W-G-F, or Phantom EWGF. I used to play Dark Souls and Demon's Souls a fair bit (I'm a wash-up now, but will be returning to face Artorias on PC) and was requested by a user to do a sort of AMA on these threads about PvP for both Demon's and Dark Souls (not too sure how this is going to fly for a first post). In addition I believe another friend of mine (a person whom I play Blazblue CS:EX with biweekly who shall remain nameless) also posts here.

    Who am I?

Most of you probably don't know me, but I did a lot of PvP research a while ago. I (with the help of a couple others) wrote the "quintessential" (ha!) Demon's Souls PvP guide, and did a series of Dark Souls PvP instructional vids (https://www.youtube.com/user/PhantomEWGF?feature=mhee).

Here's a partial list of my contributions:

    - How to crack ToB/CW (DeS).
    - How to de-level while maintaining spells (DeS).
    - The properties of Counter Hit (DeS/DkS).
    - Most stuff involving spell/weapon combo proclivities (DeS/DkS).
    - How AR actually works (see: basic arithmetic).
    - Pretty much everything to do with Poise is a result of my testing.
    - The relevance of swing speed variation within a class (DkS).
    - Stun variation within a class by virtue of upgrade path/level (DkS).
    - The hidden properties of Toggle Casting post-discovery (DeS).
    - Most stuff involving Dead Angle after it's initial discovery.
    - Instant Blocking (DeS/DkS).
    - Frame Parrying, and basically all data on parrying (DkS).
    - Most DeS special swing properties.
    - Probably a lot more I can't think of.

    Ask me anything!

How do you make the miracle resonance rings appear? Do you have to be a part of a covenant or what? I've seen them, but have no idea as to how to make them appear.

To tell you the truth: this is one of those few PvE things I don't really fully understand. Good first answer eh'?

All I do "know" is post-patch they spawn much more frequently then they used to (likely due to larger player pools in online lobbies). Also I've seen them on every character regardless of which coven they were enlisted to, so that's not related (or it least not entirely as I'm generally a Dark Wraith or Gravelord and see them quite frequently in both covens).

I do not believe you can make them appear either. They will be there, or they won't (in whichever selected spawns) from my experiences.

I will take this opportunity to make clear what I can answer:

    - Basically anything about PvP.
    - Stuff in general about Souls games.
    - How much I now hate Diablo 3.
    - Most anything about myself personally (with some reservations, such as my real identity).

Okay a serious question. How would you go about winning PvP fights with a fat roll build? And not fat rolling cannot be an answer

Last question: I did two parry instructions videos that you may or may not be familiar with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YQ1TdfV_ZU
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juY8rvI_-xY

In one of these, my partner and I attempted to parry the "ground smash" attack that is enacted by the grant, dragon tooth, great club, and some of the other larger strength weapons. I received a LOT of messages saying that the ground smash could be parried. I have noticed that there is a slight pause between the roll of the character and the actual ground smash and thought that the pause would be the moment at which a parry would be possible. But I was never successful.

CAN THE GROUND SMASH BE PARRIED?

I've done this a fair bit. I abuse the mobility of Rapier/Asian f+R1 moves to replace my roll, and good backdash weapons (since backstep is not affected by encumbrance). Another natural answer is Spear/Shield combos. I play completely unlocked too when I'm doing this, and manually pivot every swing to not give away my back, as roll-outs aren't an option like this.

I used to duel a lot with fat-roll actually to troll people, and beat some great players with it. I guess you're just going to want to just catch them off guard and get lucky, because beating anyone with 50% or chub roll is a matter of your opponent underestimating you and a good measure of luck.

Coincidentally I spoke about this with someone last night who said he was having of modicum of success with fat roll.

Well I'm further limited by it not just being fat roll, but a full Smough cosplay, so my weapon is chosen for me and I'm always 2H it. Only utility I have besides the hammer is the miracle Force. So far I'm 50/50 in 1v1s, basically if I can avoid the BS I win as no one can last long against that hammer. So far I stick to a lot of baiting and countering when I hopefully have enough time to land an R1, lots of locked and unlocked rolling R1s, and surprisingly the Fwd + R2 plunge attack which is shockingly fast and covers a lot of ground.

I definitely need to incorporate more back steps, and occasionally the follow up attack which is also quite fast, and unlocking for some R1s to rotate the swing towards a fisher.

Can you think of anything I'm missing?

    1) Not sure, but probably not. To be fair, I've never had that issue. This one girl I'm with enjoys torturing me about this stuff because she knows I'm a little embarrassed about my whole e-nerd vidja game persona. One time she cried out "Oh EWGF, (expletive) me!" during intercourse and absolutely destroyed the moment on me.

    2) The most complete builds are probably Dex/Faith hybrids with random Pyro. Anything with 45 Dexterity is really good because of the casting speed. I like Force tricks as well. The "most complete" is very subjective however.

    3) The most effective is probably straight "S&B Fish
with good mixup and an assortment of random gimmicks (Wrath Stab, Fireball/Pyro tricks). Really good Spear w/ board is similar. Again, very subjective. The most effective I've played is bow fish type builds with S&B and gimmicks. I like draw-cancelling into tricks.

I've actually seen the first video. Very nice work actually. I like how you've explored tanking parries. Keep it up.

Answer: not sure, but I'm to find out this evening and get back to you.

However, the old Demon's Souls version of the ground smash could not be parried, and some other people I know are saying the same thing. There were lots of attacks in Demon's Souls that couldn't be parried that now can be, so I'm uncertain if this attack will retain it's old properties in this respect. I will find out for certain however and post results.

You've pretty much got it. Play exceptionally carefully, and manually control swings as much as you can. You will pretty much need to totally rely on baiting, with kick and the 2h WR R1 hammer attack being your primary pokes/baits.

You're going to have to do lots of work to sneak rounds past people of even similar skill. Play it enough and find out!

There are a few more pointers I can give you:

    1) Do all just baiting outside of roll BS range. Your objective is to force a punish, that's well punishable. Your objective is to play just outside the roll BS pocket for two reasons 1) they won't actually be able to punish random empty swings with a roll BS and 2) if they follow their roll in with anything, a 2nd R1 will frequently catch them, unless they're baiting themselves (in which case you're looking at getting RBSed).

    1) Empty rolls will be your friend, and so will delayed WR R1s. S. Hammer has 2h WD R1 and 2h WR R1 as viable attacks (I seem to also remember jump attack being passable). You need to squeeze a lot of mileage out of the WR R1, because the WD R1 isn't exactly poke material. Delaying the swing, and just plain empty rolls will confuse the **** out of people.
Find the threshold for longest possible delay WR R1 and start using it immediately. Also empty rolls are different in this sense as you will simply not act after a roll giving the illusion you're deking for a delayed WR R1. This gives you 3 options instead of 1:

    - Normal 2h WR R1
    - Delayed 2h WR R1
    - Empty roll just standing there

You would be surprised how well something like this works because of the cone effect on WR R1 being able to catch between rolls if delayed. It also means if they try to roll through it, they might eat the delay, and plain ol' WR R1 can mix them up.
