I've seen many positive references to this game here on the forums, and I just saw that it hit the PS store today for $10. Is this game really good, from the perspective of a DkS addict like myself?

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
Yes; I have it myself, and I think it's a work of art. It's like "Kill Sif: The Game."
Only it makes you feel even worse.
It's not HARDCORE per se; the difficulty is there, but it's not as unforgiving as Dark Souls. The exploration and story-told-passively is there, though.

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
It's an odd creature of a game. One of the best things I've played in my gaming lifetime (somewhere in my top 10 for sure). It focuses alot on the atmosphere and exploration aspects, but the combat isn't forgotten about. If I had to describe it in relation to Dark Souls I'd say it's like if Dark Souls had a kid with an Art Game that wasn't obnoxious and pretentious (if you don't know what I mean by Art Game, go look up games like Dear Esther, Journey, and The Path). It's definitely something that I I think you should play, and IMHO one of the most worthwhile games of the past decade.

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
You speak of "art games," brings to mind games like Limbo, Braid, Outland etc. I played a little of the "Journey" demo the other night after work, but I didnt have long to play & DkS was calling me a bit too loudly! Is Journey any good? What I played of the demo didnt really grab me but again, DkS may have had something to do with that!
Back to SoC, it certainly sounds like it'd be a good deal at $10, and something I'd enjoy during the occasional DkS break!

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
Its one of my favorite games. I would honestly suggest getting the ico&sotc hd pack, because ico is an amazing game also. A lot of people claim ico is dated, which is possible i guess. I dont really look at games like that, so its hard for me to judge. I remember playing ico when i first got my ps2 back in the day, such an amazing experience. Then shadow of the colossus went the more actiony route, which i was skeptical about, and just killed it. Shadows is just a whole game of epic boss battles, the controls can take a bit getting used to but overall it is well worth it.

At $10, it's better than a steal. I would say it's actually one of those kinds of games that you need to try at least once to call yourself a gamer. It's really a different experience from almost any other game. Have I told you I love Shadow of the Colossus btw?

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
@ Reaperfan Well you've certainly sold me on SoC! Only problem now is...
@ FruitPunchNinja Thanks man, now you've given my indecisive *** another decision to make!
But seriously, I just went online and looked for that double pack w/ Ico (which I remember wanting to try when the ps2 first came out) and all the options I see, once you add shipping, come up to about $25. More than I was planning on spending on games this paycheck (was actually planning on $0) but its awfully tempting, especially since Ico isn't on PS Store! What to do???

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
Idk man, its a tuff call. I would say maybe just get sotc(not saying thats my favorite or better) just to get a taste. Plus coming from dark souls i think that might be more appealing. Ico is more of a relaxing atmospheric puzzle platformer, hard to describe but a great experience.

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
Ico & Shadow of the Colossus are games, which once played are never forgotten. They are truly beautiful to look at and thoroughly involving. Shadow is my personal favourite but they both have one thing in common, their art style. They look like an animated pen and wash drawings and yet, miraculously, the architecture is believable. If you can't afford both right now, wait until you can. It will be worth it.

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
Well, it's not necessary to say how amazing SotC is, since so many people already have this thread. But... I will anyway. Most of the bosses are kind of environmental, like Bed of Chaos, with the notable exception that they're good, mobile, and many times more epic. Also, you can platform on them.

Re: Shadow of the Colossus
Like everyone else in this thread who played and loved SotC, I have nothing but praise for the game. Also a highlight among the games I've played.
Just wanted to say: a friend of mine got it off the store, and had trouble getting into it. I guess the controls were too clunky for him (they're a bit stiff, but great for the game), and he went in half-heartedly. Then I picked up the controller, and the game felt completely natural to me. I instantly fell back in love with it and didn't want to stop playing!
So: I definitely recommend it. And at the same time, I recommend going in with an open mind about gameplay, and determination to stick with it. Because if you do, you'll be rewarded for it. It's definitely a great game that deserves--no, needs!--to be played.
