I think what the OP has said has a ring of truth; you don't play better when you're mildly drunk, you play better when you're relaxed and confident. If you're in a tight fight, or you lose a lot of souls that are critical to you, people find it tougher to retrieve it than to lose it, as there's more on the line.
Being relaxed and confident is key; when you are not, you actually lose your fine motor control skills as the 'fight and flight' adrenaline response kicks in. Your blood vessels tighten so that if you are cut, you lose less blood, and a bunch of other things that I can't remember.
I believe this is why people in the army are trained heavily to not be afraid; fear will cause them to miss/get themselves killed.
