If you invade someone and they kill you than you will still have your souls when you return to your world. If someone invades you and kills you than you have to retrieve your souls from the spot that you died.

This has already been answered, the same thing applies to white phantoms... but
Fun fact, if you are worried about losing your soul pool you can equip a ring of sacrifice and even if you die trying to reach your lost souls (say to an invader or NPC) the pool will not vanish, and you can try for it again.
