It was happening to me too, try starting the game with the wireless receiver disconected from the pc, then when you get to the menu, connect it and turn on your controller, it'll work just fine

OP states he is using wired controller not wireless.
Still the same could apply, just plug the controller in rather than a wireless receiver.

I have the same issue with a cheap noname controller, i have a ps3 controller but it never worked :x

yo mason, i posted up a link in the initial thread. I got everything working smoothly now. FINALLLYLYYYYYYawklmndfqag
basically need to tinker around with driver settings for the controller/gamepad. delete/disable uninstall other conflicting drivers that may be interupting (i guess) with the controller.
keep in mind though that the fix is meant for XBOX360 wired gamepads. not sure if thats what you're using.
When it freezes. it should unfreeze after you unplug it.

If that doesn't work, try updating your drivers: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/downloads

Remember that everyone's computer is different... there are so many hardware and software configurations that it is almost impossible to diagnose what the fault could be at times
As a general rule make sure all your firmwares for all your devices (internal and peripheral) are up to date
