What in the world is a tryhard

So I was just in the arena, there was this guy who refused to fight me and kept running away and using the purple crystal after I killed him once. It was pretty laggy so I didn't give his actions much thought.

Anyway, he messaged me afterward and accused me of being a tryhard, is this a new derogatory name or something?

Its meant to specify someone who trys too hard, who goes over the top. Like someone who would buff a WP with DMB when invading a fat roller or something. Putting in too much effort, which generally leads others to believe they are trying to make up for not being that good at the game.

But how would some1 buffing a WP with DMB+3 be a try hard...
It will actually be easy going for him...

So shouldnt he be a laid back, chill person... Who doesnt wana try hard

I personally feel all the vit gouges are try hards... Who invest minimum into other stats and make boring builds to WIN :p

No it isnt. Cheap is a tactic or an item. Tryhard is the player.

It seems to me like this is the gaming equivalent of people who don't wanna fail in life and fail school

Generally speaking, in any other game when this term pops up its safe to ignore the person who starts hurling that term. It's massively overused and absolutely stupid.

In short if you make a build/strat that's competitive (more so then the person in question) you're a try hard in their books. It's inconceivable to them that they're just bad, you're just good or any other reason. The only acceptable explanation is you only win because you're taking it all way too serious and/or using cheap tactics.

Consequently these are the same sort of idiots that flame/troll/trash talk whenever they win. Proving they take the whole thing just as serious if not more so. In short, just laugh, take it as a compliment and move on.

To me, a try hard is someone who uses boring but effective tactics to win. Nothing wrong with making the best builds and playing the most effective ways, but it does get boring to fight against.

For me, I only feel that way for DWGR players who get trapped against something, and FLIPFLIPFLIPFLIPFLIP to avoid all the damage, otherwise, so few things are annoying and cheap, I don't have an opinion on them. I feel that the word can be associated with someone who is literally trying hard in real life, like smashing the B (circle) button and dodging like that, reminds me of trying too hard to avoid something that you should have avoided in the first place (getting trapped on a fast build, psh!)

I don't really use the term "tryhard". I'd rather use "boring player". IE they're either a clone, or they are a one trick pony.

Its actually pretty sad when u see a player with 1800 hp at lvl 60 or 70 calling you a try hard just coz u buffed Spur :p

if you want an example a tryhard is someone using giants/mom mask or all the optimized stuff.. going for clutch backstabs- things like that, at a friggin friendly fc.

that guys an idiot tho, its the arena- not some buddies having whip duels.
