    The one thing this shows is that Artorias did not succumb to the Abyss by choice. But this puts into question the description of the C.Greatsword of Artorias, that says he willingly joined a covenant with the Abyss.

    Maybe this was not the first time that Artorias abysswalked? If the New Londo incident occurred before, he could have traversed the Abyss there, and then he tried the same on Oolacile but got defeated by Manus and the living humanity sprites (or whatever those enemies are called)
