Shiva is a merchant though, so maybe GamerGirl-619 doesn't want to kill Shiva just yet. You could still do what he said except just kick his bodyguard (A Npc wearing Shadow Armor and Fog Ring) off the cliff, quit and reload to grab the ring and just leave the forest to go abolish your sins if you wish to buy stuff from Shiva later on.

To have him as a merchant, you have to join the forest covenant then go down to blighttown (near the waterwheel) and he is there, provided if you didn't kill him in the forest.

His items are pretty expensive, pretty sure his cheapest item is 10k souls. I recommend having at least 50k.
