Quick question: Shield upgrades

Can shields that upgrade along the regular paths (ie don't use twinkling titanites) only upgrade Regular, Crystal, Magic, Lightning, Divine, and Fire?

Or can they also upgrade to Raw, Occult, Enchanted, and Chaos?

I'm doing some reading on the gamefaq boards and so far they just mention fire/lightning. I guess most of them are hardcore normal path, I've only seen one person say they liked elemental shields. I guess they perfer stability over elemental protection.

good question, after reading this i really wanted to knwo, after dying twice in the catacombs i found the answer, no occult or chaos.

That's why I need to ask... I never bothered trying anything other than regular, so I've never thought about it. I looked at some of the pages that were already done with what looks like the template I made, and I think it's ublug who's been going around removing the extra categories. I trust his revisions! But there's no way I'd do it manually for every page, so I made a template for the shields (my original one was supposed to be for both weapons and shields, but I didn't know shields had fewer upgrade paths). It's the same, only it has the extra paths already removed.

I suppose it makes sense, so we can only have fire/holy/lightning/magic. I have made a divine shield before and I didn't like it at all, didn't really seem worth it in my eyes.

it does make sense, but i still think its weird. too me chaos makes sense but not occult, dont ask me why, i dont even know.

There are very few enemies that do holy damage... None that I can thinkf of right now!

Might be useful in PvP. You think it'd block WoG more? Not too many divine weapons in PvP either though.

Might be useful... for high level PvP! Against people using the Greatsword of Artorias. I'm trying really hard to find a use for it here.

Did you try an attack type shield like bonewheel or pierce shield, I keep seeing people talking about Chaos shields. I read a post that said it adds about 5%, now I don't fully believe that, maybe 10% or so but going to need to test it. I've seen a few that says stability reverts back to the +5 but again, no confirmation.

**** that's a good point... I have 2 bonewheels, 1 lightning and the other is either fire or chaos, I can't remember.

I think it's like the other shields though, no chaos.

I hope... I've been going around all the shields pages and removing Raw, Enchanted, Occult, and Chaos.

nope, no chaos bonewheel.

Oh and to carry on our conversation, I would have to +11 a shield but it should work. It would drastically reduce the time because of farming but I'd still have to farm white and red, so that may require kiln unless I get lucky and get 10-20 of those chunks each.

Most of the shield pages are done now. All the ones that had no page, have a template one ready to be filled in now, and those that had a page I've revised.

There were only a few oddball pages (someone created the page, wrote one line, left it at that. thanks...) that will take more time to correct. I'm on that now.

Can't you delete the page then go off a template? I believe it's upgraded with twinkling also, I wasn't able to make sure but it is considered a unique shield.

You know what though... I think, since you have to keep switching from the "upgrade weapon" to "modify weapon" menu and back, that you won't be able to do them all that way... I think you'll need to get all the shards and large shards, and chunks are the only ones you'll be able to recycle.

Edit: no, I don't have privileges to delete a page. I think the best I can do will have to be copy/paste, and hope it transfers over properly. And I'll have to write down any pertinent information already on the page first, then re-transcribe it after...

Yeah that was my plan, I can buy the shards easily. I hope the copying goes well.

Are there actual benefits to upgrading a shield to divine/lightning/fire?

Increased protection to those elements.

Shields don't block 100% of the damage from those sources, so even while you're blocking some damage will go through. If you upgrade your shield to an elemental path (or Divine and Magic) then less of that damage will go through your shield.

This comes at the price of stability, though. Shields upgraded along those paths have less stability than a regular +15 shield.

Once we have some numbers though, it may prove worthwhile. Especially for PvP... well, if you use a shield in PvP, that is! I never did...

wow guys, great thread I always upgraded shields normally too and mainly for stability...many a time have wondered about the elemental upgrades, kudos!

From what I know, I saw that you can't upgrade to Raw.
