The area that you're in now, as well as the one that you'll come to afterwards, is often used by more experienced players as an arena to fight each other. So you'll come across a lot of powerful players in those areas. It should calm down some once you move on a bit though.
Also, in case you didn't see my edit:
Just be careful of becoming too reliant on them. They're not very powerful weapons, and you'll probably become a better player if you learn to play without one, but they can be very helpful in a pinch.

Also, if you aren't getting a spear to drop for you, you can buy one from the merchant.
And when you meet the boss, stay calm; it took me three hours of fighting him to finally beat him, getting to him over and over not included. When I did finally kill him, I was empty on Estus and had 50 health left, but I have to tell you, I have NEVER felt a rush like that in any other game.

Wow thanks for the spear advice , i summoned somebody to test and we just killed the taurus demon and a guy with a big mace thing ( that one we almost did not beat him we got lucky) i got havel ring is that good?
I skipped the 2 guys over the merchant it was taking me too long to mange to get a hit , but now i'll try.

Havel's ring is one of my favorites, as it allows you to carry bigger weapons/armor while still retaining a faster movement speed. Having said that, it really only shines once you get your endurance up (It's based off of percentages).

Well, you can feed them to fraampt when you wake him up, but that won't be for a while yet. Alternatively you can drop them for nothing, but it supposidly spawns a creep in someone elses world that that play can kill to get that item.
