    Post by Slarg232 Mon May 06, 2013 2:02 am

For those of you who don't know, Mars One is a privately funded project to try to colonize mars, by granting people a one way ticket up there. These people would live cut off from a lot of modern conventions, and would maybe get one transmission to earth a month. No hope of ever returning to earth would ever happen, due to expenses and by the time we get the ability to, your bodies will have adjusted to Mars' atmosphere/gravity, making it incredibly dangerous.

I'm currently creating my application. While it sounds like a poopy endevour, I WILL BE COLONIZING MARS! Think of the historical implications that would bring! I would die for that honor.

There's the page. Could I maybe convince some of you to vote for my video when I get it up? That won't be till Friday, as there is an entrance fee and I can't do anything online without my banks consent, and I can just visit them in person when I get home from college.

If I didn't have a family you could bet I would apply. I'll definitely give you a vote, if you're sure it's what you want

Never have I been so sure of anything in my life. Why worry about things like Money, work, and politics when I can live on another planet, where the only thing that keeps me alive and I have to worry about is the sweat on my brow.

I'd never get picked. I know my luck, besides if DkS2 is going to be region locked I'm not going to have anyone to play with. sad

That sounds like a horrible idea, actually. Your body doesn't just "adjust" to a whole different planet, gravitational pull, atmosphere, etc, not to mention that Mars(I think) has that curious aspect where it could be hot and cold in different places(or times, can't remember). Point is, colonising Mars without much in the way of terraforming seems stupid.

That's our job; cultivate enough plants to sustain ourselves and live off the water we can find.

Honestly with the capabilities of robots today i'd suggest sending a robotic vanguard to set up a base camp, in short a space capsule that expands into a modular structure after landing, multiples of these could be sent and attached together by the human applicants to form a base. but this still leaves the problem of water if th extraction machine fails in an unexpected way and food which would be in limited supply, if anything happened to a single harvest most of the colonists would starve or turn to cannabalism as there really would'nt be much else to eat. also i doubt mars' dirt makes for good planting soil so you'd need to import dirt as well, also what plants would you take to produce oxygen as thats REALLY needed and tanks of it won't be enough? actually oxygen producing bacteria would be best, for example the species that first gave earth oxygen which still exists today. in fact why not just bombard mars with loads of said bacteria until there was enough gas to use for growing things? also if said bacteria can't survive on mars we could cross breed it with the proper extremophile bacteria to meet the conditions on mars. either way all of this would take a LOT of money, honestly i'd bet the project will be delayed due to funding issues in the future with the way we've short stopped the space program.

also just a tip if you do make it, exercise everyday to help stave of bone loss, it won't stop it but it'll slow it down, another thing if you ever did come back to earth ( yes i know this is supposed to be a one way trip but...) any way if you'd been on mars for say 7+ years earths gravity would make your bones snap under your own weight if you came back, so i guess it really would be one way... and now im thinking about low gravity sex... hope you find a girl/boy friend (whatever you prefer) so you can finally satisfy the lascivious imaginings of lonely sci-fi fans through out the ages.

This is an incredibly stupid idea.We haven't even made a semi-permanent base on the moon yet and Mars is a hell of a lot further away. There is literally no point in colonization until we have advanced our space travel technology to the point at which we can create reliable supply lines.

This seems like a great way to spend billions just to kill a dozen or so people.I wouldn't bother signing up until we have a moonbase if I were you.

Living on Earth is too mainstream. Obviously we need to move to Mars to continue our existence as hipsters.

Its cheaper to send humans. They do their own maintenance with out the needs for extra parts.

But seriously; I looked into it and checked out the application. It sounds realy awesome.... but...

They are taking 30-40 people braking them up into teams of 4 and housing them in steels huts in the desert for 4 years training, biodome style, learning everything you need to do in order to survive on a hostile environment; electronics, plants and habitats, biology, chemistry, engineering...etc. Then they finally choose one team of 4 out of all the teams to ship off to Mars. If you or one of your team gets ill during this training you fail and either get hoofed out or got to the back of the queue. Thats a lot of pressure man!

Plus they want you to pay $30 for the application?! hmmm... Might give it a skip given I have someone to keep me down here.

i think you should be glad about not going ... theres alot to live for on earth today and it seems like a lonly dark mission with very low potential for excitment, health, and love. i don't see a point in throwing all of this away.. plus ur only 21.. i dont think the people signing up for this have any idea of what they could potentially lose
