Re: Jet Packs?
the dks version would be funtioning dragon form wings, basically a short burst upwards at a 80 degree angle from the ground to a bit over head height, a quick dodge for poiseless dragons basically.

Re: Jet Packs?
Uh no. sparkly-twinkly-lizard at least tries to make it make in-game sense, but a straight jet pack? No. It would be neat if the jumping mechanic in DS had more variety. Something as simple as being able to jump straight up that had a vertical attack of sorts could maybe work. I was disappointed that the dragon form gave you little useless wings so if there was to be something like it in DS2 that had modified jumping with the wings I'd be DS wasn't that platform focused & I imagine trying to make it such would make level designing harder. It's nice to dream of fully armored people hopping to and fro though.

Re: Jet Packs?
However silly the presence of literal jetpacks in Dark Souls 2 would be, I think OP brings up the quite relevant discussion of potential means of transportation in Dark Souls 2.
Isn't there supposed to be a level on a boat? Is some form of flight, at some point during the game, really that ridiculous a notion?

Re: Jet Packs?
It depends on what they were used for. If a player had a jetpack, (which in my opinion make no sense), he could possibly fly from start straight to boss with full hp and flasks, fly from invaders making invasions lame and boring. Jetpacks just don't fit this type of game. It's Dark Souls, not some lame war game. It doesn't fit this genre.JohnnyHarpoon wrote:However silly the presence of literal jetpacks in Dark Souls 2 would be, I think OP brings up the quite relevant discussion of potential means of transportation in Dark Souls 2.

Re: Jet Packs?
Right. And I'm quite aware of my optimism, here, but I was choosing to read into this thread as a statement more akin to: having to walk around everywhere in Dark Souls can get boring, and if DkS2 is going to be a bigger game, what different modes of getting around could there be?
So, it doesn't have to involve jetpacks, or even a reasonable facsimile.
Considering that flight would more than likely be an unrealistic ability to just turn on and off, I was also going so far as to hypothesize that, given there's supposedly a level on a boat, perhaps there will be some kind of flying level of sorts as well. It was just an idea as to how flight could potentially be effectively utilized without drastically changing the core of the game itself.
So, yes, I agree that a jetpack is very unlikely and potentially game-breaking, however, I do think that the topic opens up different avenues of thought on the subject of transportation in general.

Re: Jet Packs?
I don't know anything about a boat. But if there is one, it will probably play out as a level. Flying in DKS doesn't make sense because the mechanics for flight would be totally different. If it was a dlc then maybe it could work but I still don't think it would work in this type of genre. Maybe as a cutscene going from a certain point to another but not for gameplay.

Re: Jet Packs?
I don't know, man. Imagine a Bed of Chaos-esque boss battle - straight forward, more procedural than a fight, but with environmental hazards - that takes place mid-fight, perhaps on the back of a creature, or in any which way you could think of. Maybe even throw in a twinge of Ceaseless-esque attacks, just for thrills.
I don't think something like that is so out of the question. And I'm sure there are other potential ideas that wouldn't be impossible, so long as you think about the logistics and how to place it in the within the context of the game.

Re: Jet Packs?
True but with your example, quite a few people co op that boss. Be really difficult having 2 or 3 people flying around trying not to get into peoples way. This game has multi player options. Doing co op with a friend and doing a flying stage would be a little annoying because you or your friend could get in each others way. Like I said, if it was a cut scene it would work better.

Re: Jet Packs?
Dark Souls is about perfectly the core mechanics until it becomes flawless to overcome challenges. Flying can't be part of the core mechanic, so it won't be added.
What Dark Souls REALLY need is a cover system, you know? 100% yolo Gears of War style.

Re: Jet Packs?
I still think some people aren't understanding that I'm not implying the character should fly, at all. I'm merely discussing different ways flight could be incorporated in level design or boss battle design (so, a flying LEVEL or BOSS), outside of cutscenes.
Twig, I think you're underestimating the difficulty of the Bed of Chaos boss battle - it is one of the few boss battles in Dark Souls that is actually harder with phantoms than without. I would also incorporate the Four Kings into this category. So, I don't see why it's so ridiculous that this be the case the DkS2 for a boss or two, as well.
Just for further reference, I'm not saying that it's going to happen, or even that it should happen. But, I just think, when you actually take the time to take into account the game's engine and physics, the concept is not as ridiculous as everyone is making it out to be.

Re: Jet Packs?
Besides the obvious trolling, which apparently worked. He brings attention to the real point. 'adding stuff to dark souls'
there is no need. as side from minor modifications for smoothness of game play, Dark Souls does not need anything added to it. it is badass because it is Dark Souls, adding in effect takes away from the essence of the game.
as far as the transportation discussion. did anyone notice that there has never been 'jumping' (aside from plunging attacks) in the game. it is purposely so, because it restricts the players movements in the game. its not skyrim where you can jump up mountains. its dark souls, you follow the path through the maze and if anything try not to fall to your death.
like one poster said earlier. the only thing I need is Dark Souls 2.

It's actually against the rules to insult people directly on the forum.
Silly/non-serious post or not, insults are never appropriate.
