A Warning To Everyone

People are using a link to trick people into thinking that they've found a person's facebook profile.  It is a profile with some numbers, but it sends you to your own facebook page making it seem like they know your real name, names of friends, or whatever other information you have available.

Just to say to tolvo and everyone else, I have discussed this 'joke' with the offending party.

They understand completely that this is wrong and shall not do so again. I explained how privacy on this site i paramount and that they should respect that and afterward they were deeply apologetic and understanding of how sinister that 'joke' could be to some individuals.

I've encountered that before. It's a prank used by a person describing a person they kinda like, then you click the link.

Needless to say, I was surprised someone wanted to date Batman.
But then again, I'm not surprised at all someone wants to date Batman. 

I'm glad it hasn't happened to me, even though I'm not even sure what exactly happened in the first place anyway.

I always knew that you were batman. Maybe it's because you and him are never in the same room at the same time.

I've edited out my more heated parts of the post since they do understand why it was wrong and how it can effect people now, and just seemed to not know how badly it could cause some to feel and react.

Sorry to bump this thread, but the info might save someone deleting their account on a kneejerk reaction.

If this kind of thing happens to anyone elsewhere on the net, look for .php in the URL, or the link location in the bottom left corner of your browser (if the URL is a hyperlink or w/e you call them).

.php doesn't appear in any real Facebook profile URL AFAIK, so its the give away of the hoax.




As OP states theres also a bunch of numbers, but these can be changed, the '.php' seems to be the only constant.

The easiest way to avoid this is simply not to have a Facebook

Can't send me to my own profile if said profile never existed to begin with

I'll admit, that would be kind of creepy. I'd be more afraid of someone who could track down my various anonymous forum accounts than someone who could find an account that uses my real name ala Facebook.

Yes, but unless you can compile a list of all the other forums I go/have gone to based off just my username here it won't really creep me out. I can find plenty of posts of mine just by googling my username

And yes, you have to separate which ones are me and which ones are other people on forums I don't go to who happen to use the name Reaperfan. Just finding another Reaperfan on another forum who happens to be me by chance won't freak me out.

Seriously, the easiest way to go about this is to not have a Facebook account. Our parents always told us to not post personal information online, but with the advent of Facebook they themselves posted who was where and at what time. It amazes me that people think the whole NSA scandal is worthy of paranoia when hundreds of companies constantly monitor your life, if you pursue these social networking sites and other such activities.

Bottom line: If you don't want something to get traced to you don't post it online. If the right person wanted to track you he/she could do so in a few hours (at most) in their PJs while sipping coffee and waiting to invade some tools in the forest.
