The Most intense/ heavy atmosphere in a book

Given that all we really do on this forum is read or play Darksouls I am assuming at least 25% of you read so if you do what book have you ever read that had a heavy atmosphere as in you caught yourself saying "Holy S***" more than once.

For me it was the Escape from furnace series just finished it today read the epilogue online and my only thought at the end was holy sh*t

A couple for me.

Matterhorn was one. It's a great book on Vietnam, written by an actual 'nam veteran. Another is Lonesome Dove. That is a GREAT book, probably my favorite of all time.

the cage was pretty heavy... too short of a story though

as far as grimdark goes Star Wars: Death Troopers was pretty vicseral as far as star wars goes.

I'd have to agree with these two. I'm about a third of the way through A Storm of Swords (3rd in A Song of Ice and Fire), and my mind has been blown repeatedly. The Children of Hurin was kind of depressing, though.

Uhm, not sure what you mean by heavy atmosphere, anyway I usually avoid very heavy books.
As for the "holy s..." part, Dune for sure :shock:

Yes, define heavy. I don't generally read creepy or dark books but I'm not sure thats what you mean.

I guess he just means books were you were totally immersed. I guess.

All of them. If I'm reading a book the world no longer exists and there is only the book.

Of course! As long as it's a good book, but I guess he asked about a book that really caught you with an extraordinary atmosphere/story. I guess.

It has been a long time now since I last really read/enjoyed a book. :| It's quite sad actually.

Probably Paradise Lost.

Only in Death, Dan Abnett; and I am Legend, Richard Mattheson. That second one in particular. I really recommend it.
