The Depths aren't a sewer Empty The Depths aren't a sewer

Post by Shkar Sun Jun 24, 2012 5:40 pm

Or at least, they weren't built to be that way. It just makes no sense.

1: There aren't that many access areas for the waste to enter from.
2: There are a ton of sealed off doors, some of which have a firey light leaking out the bottom.
3: There are tons of crates and wagon wheels stored down there.
4: Massive amphitheaters and hallways which would be completely unnecessary.
5: Light can be seen in the massive cracks in the boss fight room ceiling, meaning at least part of it is unlocked.
6: None of the houses are shown to have bathrooms, and in fact the rooms in Anor Londo have chamber pots.
7: Lots of bars blocking doorways. Stopping Debris is one thing, but that's just ridiculous.
8: The boss fight room has turrets and walkways. What would they be in that massive room FOR?

Quite frankly, it all adds up to point at something other then a sewer, but I won't deny it is designed to channel water. Is it a storm drain system to funnel water away from the cities? Was it a prison for the undead/criminals that are sealed off behind the doors? Some kind of third choice or combination?

Maybe it was designed as a training ground for the Lordran toboggan racing squad.

I would say that it's a place to quarantine disease and plague, hence being able to get poisoned and cursed by the rats and basilisks, respectively.

I wasn't aware that people thought they were a sewer. I've never been able to figure out what precisely they are though since there's a lot of curious elements. The holes in the floor particularly are intriguing

I figured it's something between an elaborate sewer and storm drain. Plus extra unnecessary stuff just for the hell of it.

Fun fact - The Parasitic Wall Hugger in Blighttown is intentionally placed at the end of a ramp. It's implied that it's feeding off of runoff from the Depths.

Evidence that it is a sewer: The Barbarians are carrying dung pies because they have plenty of access to **** from the depths.

There are no toilets in the game. You can see chamber pots in Anor Londo, and if ANYONE could have toilets it would be the royal family/gods.

Well, what about that well in Firelink? Open-air, Roman-style communal toilet?

There's a reason so many adventurers stop by there whenever they need to catch a breather, Firelink has the best amenities in all of Lordran.

Well Btown used to be full of water, and the depths obviously drain into Btown. I'm thinking Btown used to be a reservoir and depths is a sort of storm drain that gathered water and fed the reservoir.

All the sickness and dung is something that came after whatever drained Btown.

Something everyone seems to miss is the very beginning. You come into an area in which there are benches lying around, under which there is a place to cook food. why would a sewrs have something like that?

I don't think they're sewers for the record (or at least not just sewers) but to answer your question Madara, time has passed and things change. The furniture is all wood so newer than the timelines suggested around all over the place. It could easily be that underground areas were safer for a time being and refugees escaped to wherever they wouldn't die or become undead and set up a camp in the sewers. However I don't think they're sewers. Exclusively

What if it's like an underground Venice? The waterways serve multiple purposes, including sewer drainage while the area is not in and of itself a sewer.

I think it's a place where the dead and disease were quarantined. Then Seathe used it to place his freaking Basilisks there. I think the holes were to keep the quarantined from escaping, and only the staff knows the way around it. When I say staff, I mean guards haha! Btw, there is a way through the entire place without the need to jump. So, ya know. And I think there is a way from the lower depths to the upper depths. I just don't remember how.

Plus, you forget the KING of this place, the Gaping Dragon. It probably devoured whatever was truly there, and then he could have spread the disease. Because the developers described him as being transformed by his ever-growing hunger, and not from his surroundings. He could have transformed it into the poison-infested place that it is.

Oh, and Eingyi made Blighttown poisonous.

About the basilisks, something broke them out. The entire area with the basilisks at one point had bars going across it, but at some point something smashed through them and escaped.

Seath couldn't fit in the Depths. He's like 4 times taller then the tunnels.

Meh. I dont really pay attention to it going up. Im just glad that it does. And seeing one of my poats with a green bar makes me happy XD

Anyway, a channeler, the channeler we actually see, even, could easily have been the one that broke out the basilisks.

The problem is that the bars are broken from the inside out. Unless the Channeler was initially trapped in there (I don't see how that would work), he couldn't have done it.

Well, THEY could have broken out. Or maybe the gaping dragon was locked up in there before it got huge? What is in the deptha or near the depths that could have broken out of that cage? Maybe the giant rat?
