DSD: The Dark Souls Dictionary

Hi guys! I’ve been thinking about this for a while now and I need your help. Understandably, since the majority of our most active members are DkS veterans, the amount of abbreviations and nicknames used about various things is prominent. This might cause some confusion among newer members or forum lurkers who are not that familiar with dark souls yet. So, I decided to make this collection of the most common abbreviations and nicknames to help new players out. I think I’ve seen a topic similar to this somewhere but I couldn’t find it so i made a new one.

Keep in mind that some of these are more regularly used than others.

I’m sure I have forgotten about something, so let’s try to make this as complete as possible together. There is a short list in the “new player help” wiki page but in my opinion, a dedicated topic could be easier to find.

AGS: Abyss Greatsword
AR: Attack Rating
Arty: Artorias

B:

BB: Bottomless Box
BBoP: Black Bow of Pharis
BKGA: Black Knight Great Axe
BKGS: Black Knight Greatsword
BKH: Black Knight Halberd
BKS: Black Knight Sword/Shield
BMC: Bloodred Moss Clump
BoC: Bed of Chaos
BP: Black Phantom.
BPMC: Blooming Purple Moss Clump. Often just "moss"
BS: Backstab
BSS: Balder Side Sword

C:

Cat: Catalyst
CB: Chaos Blade
CFW: Chaos Fire Whip
CMW: Crystal Magic Weapon
CoD: Crown of Dusk
Comp bow: Composite bow
CS: The chaos servant covenant - it refers to either the covenant or its members.
CS: Chaos Storm
CSS: Crystal Soul Spear

D:

DB: Divine Blessing
DBF: Dragon Bone Fist
DGA: Demon Great Axe
DGH: Demon's Great Hammer
DGM: Demon Great Machete
DGS: Dragon Great Sword
DKGA: Dragon King Great Axe
DM: Darkmoon Blade. Usually a member of the covenant, but could also mean the buff.
DMB: Darkmoon blade. Usually the weapon buff but can also mean a member of the darkmoon blade covenant.
DS : Demon Spear
DSB: Dragonslayer Greatbow
DSS: Dragonslayer Spear
DST: Dark Silver Tracer
DW: Darkwraith
DWGR: Dark Wood Grain Ring

E:

EoD: Eye of Death

F:

Family Mask: One of the masks dropped by pinwheel. Check MoC, MoF and MoM.
FH: Forest Hunter. The covenant or a member of it
FS/surge: Fire Surge
FS: Firestorm
FT: Fire Tempest
FW: Fire Whip

G:

Ganker: A player who is waiting with one or two phantoms to kill invaders. Generally frowned upon, but still very common.
Gaxe: Regular greataxe.
GB: Green Blossom
GC: Great Combustion or Great Club
GCFB: Great Chaos Fireball
GCS: Grass Crest Shield
GFB: Great Fireball
GGSD: Gravelord Greatsword Dance.
G. halberd: Gargoyle's Halberd
GLS: Gravelord Sword
GLGS: Great Lord Greatsword
GMB: Great Magic Barrier
GMW: Great magic weapon
Griefer: In dark souls, griefer usually means a player who uses overpowered gear to invade low level players for easy kills. Griefing is often frowned upon, but very common at Burg, Parish and Depths.
GS: Great Sword or Great Scythe
GSD: Gravelord Sword Dance
GSoA: Either Greatshield of Artorias, or Greatsword of Artorias

H:

HCSM: Homing Crystal Soul Mass
HR: Hornet Ring
HSM: Homing Soul Mass
HW: Hidden Weapon

K:

Kat: Katana
KJ: Karmic justice.

L:

LC: Large club

M:

MLBH: Moonlight Butterfly Horn
MLGS: Moonlight Greatsword
MoC: Mask of the Child
MoF: Mask of the Father
MoM: Mask of the Mother
MSGS: Man-Serpent Greatsword
Mura: Murakumo

N:

NG: New Game
NG+: New Game Plus
Nocs: Binoculars

O:

OGS: Obsidian Greatsword
O&S: Ornstein and Smough

P:

PG: Princess Guard
PGS: Painting Guardian Sword
Plow: Four-Pronged Plow
PMC: Purple Moss Clump, often just "moss"
PvE: Player versus Engine/Environment
PvP: Player versus Player
PW: Power within (1) or The Painted World Of Ariamis (2).
1. Pyromancy found from Blighttown.
2. Hidden location found in Anor Londo.

R:

Ring of FaP: Ring of Favor and Protection
RSS: Red Sign Soapstone
RTSR: Red tearstone Ring

S:

SGA: Stone Greataxe
SLB: Sunlight Blade
SL: Soul Level
SKS: Silver Knight Spear/Shield
SoV: Spirit of Vengeance
SS: Soul Spear
Sunbro: A member of the Warrior of sunlight covenant or Solaire of Astora

T:

TCC: Tin Crystallization Catalyst
TotG or ToG: Tomb of the Giants
Turtle: A player who fights extremely defensively using a long spear or rapier and shield.
TWoP: Tranquil Walk of Peace

U:

UGW: Ultra great weapon

V:

VoS: Vow of Silence

W:

WDB: White Dragon Breath
WotG or WoG: Wrath of the Gods
WP: Washing Pole
WSS: White sign soapstone

By the way. How would you define a griefer? That's an often used term which has a special meaning in dark souls.

not all of them use glitches, some of them do low level runs to get all the stuff but the bb glitch made it A LOT worse and low level invasions got ruined because of it.

I added "Griefer" and you may suggest a better definition if you think that's not good.

Generally a griefer is someone who intends to cause grief in other players, simple as that. Not in the same way that an invader may cause problems though, they are merely looking for Player Versus Player combat, however a Griefer's complete intention is to ruin the experience of others. There are people who do it unintentionally, but the definition gets a bit blurry at that point. Gankers can be griefers, low level and high level invaders can be, and even solo hosts. The use of glitches, exploits, and unfair advantages are a common staple of a griefer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. At last I can look up what those darn acronyms are. They've been a thorn in my side for ages and although I've been playing Dark Souls forever I can never remember what they stand for.

Oh, and Tolvo, if you want to get the gal, take my advice, bragging wont work. In fact from my experience, it's a turn off. Janis Joplin had the right idea when she sang 'Wont somebody buy me a Mercedes Benz.' Get the picture? That'd work big time. (Only joking). If you can make 'em laugh, you're halfway there and with a Lemon Cupcake-you're home free.
