Doing a low level run. I'm trying to decide what light set to start upgrading for magic defense later in the game? Crimson seems decent, and has curse resistance as well. Any recommendations?

I have a sl60 mage that uses this buildout, but with the blood-stained skirt for looks. Magic defense over 400 at 99 humanity, and you can fast roll with wolf ring at pretty low endurance. (I was using this build to try to wean myself off DWGR).

Yeah, I've been going through all the light armor sets in anticipation of it. I actually like fastrolling better, I think most of the weapons/attacks in the game were designed with it in mind as a counter, not DWGR. If you roll sideways in particular you dodge just as well, but can immediately punish your opponent instead of ending up 10 feet away. And the high magic defense helps a lot with things that are harder to fastroll dodge, like WoG.
I've also been pleased with how medium roll is more viable than I thought. I sometimes swap havel's gauntlets and solaire's iron leggings +10 into the above along with the wolf ring for 77 poise, and my medrolling mage still does well. I'm less convinced the patch will be the end of life on Earth as we know it.

if you really, really want magic defense, the mlgs adds 40, so putting it on your back while you 2h a weapon isn't a bad idea.

not with magic, with fire, the mlgs is the only one I'm aware of for magic.

Painting Guardian Set is pretty good at +5 against magic.
