In another thread yesterday, there were some opinions posted on which upgrade path is better for a light crossbow (on a low level character). I just checked the stats for a light crossbow. It says the Phy damage is 310 at +15, and although there aren't any stats for the Lightning version in this wiki, my strat guide says at +5 it gets 210 PHY + 200 Lightning. It seems the Lightning would be a better path. Is there anything I might be missing? Some hidden stats or factors that might alter this?

split damage has to go through both lightning and physical dfense, admitedly crossbows don't suffer as much as other weapons from this due to lightning bolt ammo but you'll do better with pure physical 8/10 times.

If the opponent has a lot of armor (flipping mask tank) then the +15 will do more damage.
But if the opponent doesn't have a lot of armor (as in robes) then the lightning one will be better.

That actually makes complete sense. Thanks for the info. Certainly explains why I doubled my damage shooting at Smough after Ornstein. It was his armor.

I just go crystal +4 Light Crossbows. Same AR as Heavy Crossbow but lower weight. They're easily farmed at the Burg. Sometime I go lightning for fun and lore issues (ie. my character loves lightning).

By the way I was playing DeS and they have a crossbow that scales with magic AR, although there aren't magic bolts. This could mean that the magic AR is added to the bolt. If you would upgrade a crossbow to magic in DkS and use it with lightning bolts it will have 3 types of attack: physical, magical and lightning. Weird and would love to test it, but I'm sure it will be weaker than a normal because it has to go through 3 defenses instead of 1.
