Pure Mage and trouble with 4-2 Empty Pure Mage and trouble with 4-2

Post by DMC Wed Oct 17, 2012 9:24 am

I posted this on another thread but just decided I should start my own.

I've never done the mage thing before. I just heard about how easy it was due to magic being overpowered blah blah blah etc. so I thought I should at least experience one run through with a mage.

So far good. The damage I'm doing is ludicrous for a low level build. I've got the Kris Blade, the Ring of Magical Sharpness, the Monk's Head Collar and also the Crescent Falchion+4 for when I only absolutely need to melee something. My level was 23 up until recently but I had to go to 29 to get four spell slots. Three slots was not enough.

I generally like to keep my SL down as low as I can and don't like 'wasting' SLs by putting them into stats not fitting to a build. Virtually everything has gone into MAG and INT apart from some VIT. I've put nothing into STR, DEX or END. I've Miralda's clothes.

Everything was going fine until 4-2...

So tell me this - HOW DO I BEAT THE GODDAMN MAGIC BEAM REAPERS?!!!!I don't have the STR for a shield and don't the DEX for a bow. I know I could simply level up and use one of those but that feels like a cop out with this build. I've tried rolling but that doesn't avoid their beams as far as I can tell.

    I can't believe I can't figure this out but I can't. What can I say? I'm a total mage noob lol

The beam lurkers are more resistant to magic than the other lurkers, so try to use fire against them.
You can run right by the last beam-lurker on the lowest level, but the reaper next to it will shoot you in the back when you continue down the stairs. Kill the reaper quickly, or dodge its attack before proceeding down to the slug area.
If you need a shield to block their beam: If your class is royalty make a dark buckler, if your class is magician there is no good magic defense shield without putting a point into dex.

If all else fails there's an easy cheesy way to make the second reaper fall to its death:

The easy cheesy method was EXACTLY what I was looking for lol

What I mean is I knew there woud be some way of making this part easier by thinking a bit eh...laterally but couldn't figure out a way. Thanks for that.

Someone else told me to just run up to the lurkers and wail away but I've tried that and found with so little END and only a magic weapon (crescent falchion) I couldn't kill them in one combo and if they hit back..well I've no shield and can't really roll on those ledges...

It's just occurred to me that I didn't think of the melee fire spell (can't remember what it's called). That might work if I just run in close.

I suppose if all else fails I'll admit defeat and put the point in DEX and get a shield with magic defense.

    Thanks again.

    Hello folks,

I found this thread and think i could add a question to this because of my first mage built (it should become a pure mage) in DeS.
What is a good auxiliary melee weapon for a mage? a weapon that S-scales with the mage stats like intelligence or/and magic and doesn't need other stats like str. or dex.?

Looking for an early game weapon (at sl1 to sl10) and a weapon for higher level like sl 30 or sl 40.

    EDIT:
I'm also interested in the best early game spells and the spells I only can get later.

    Thanks for your help!

    Best wishes!

You probably shouldn't piggyback threads.  Even if it seems unnecessary, if your question isn't the same as the original post's you might take attention and help away from the original person who made the thread.  That said, I'll still answer your question, just keep that in mind for the future winking

For a pure mage, you actually don't really need a weapon at all.  If you're doing a pure mage right, you should always have both hands occupied with your catalyst and the Kris Blade.  If you really, really need to use melee instead of casting spells, the Kris Blade itself is actually not a bad weapon if you have a high Magic stat.

Other than that, the only reason you should really bother with a melee weapon is as a source of MP regen between fights so you don't have to spice so much.  So basically any Crescent-upgraded weapon that's light-weight and has low stat requirements.

And if you really, really, really, really can't seem to avoid close combat as a pure mage, you should be taking the spell Ignite rather than worrying about a weapon.

    Hello Reaperfan,

    ok, I see my mistake.
I'll start a new thread and maybe we can copy both postings to that one so it is corrected.

    Thanks for your answer!
