in the depths there is a butcher at a table wit ha dog. kill them and take the large ember out of the chest. give it to andre of astora (first blacksmith by the garden). this butcher is very close to laurentus the pyromancer you save.

You need to go to blacksmith Andrei. He will upgrade from 5 - 6+. You can then upgrade further with him or do it at the bonfire. Unless of course your going for elementals.

It's not the Giant it's Andre who modifies normal path weapons. You do require having the embers and giving them to him first and once he has them select modify at the top, and tab to your right until you see the option you want.
Once modified they'll drop back into reinforcement until they reach their next modify tier.

Quick one... is it better to level it up to +10 then buff the weapon or mod it from the outset.
One character is High Intelligence the other one I am using is High Intelligence and High Faith (did not decide which path I wanted)

Take them to +10(+15 later in the game) and buff.
