What I like most about DKS story Empty What I like most about DKS story

Some of your are going to denounce me.

I don't care about DKS story at all! The reason why this is so great is that DKS doesn't try make me care. It's wonderful. I can just play a game and not have to be force fed some lame-o nerds ideal fantasy girl drama in a world where everything has gone from bad to worse but only you, the mighty chosen monkey, can stop it because of the special curve-ball turd slinging ability you inherited from your poo slinging grand-uncles nephew that makes you invincible in the face of impossible odds and the only candidate who can save the universe from the clutches of the absurdely evil Dr. Bluebutt who is bent on total universal domination because his sister doesn't love him the same way he loves her.

The extent of thought I ever put into DKS story was when I encountered Solaire the first time "Heh, this guys pretty cool"

and the second time "This guy kicks a$$"

and further encounters, "Solaire, you are MY BROTHER!"

It's not that I think DKS story is as lame as those other games' stories are, it's just that I don't play video games for stories, period. The day they can fit a classic masterpeice like Call of the Wild or Last of the Mohicans or Gates of Fire into a video game, I'll care about the story, but until then just gimme a game! Thank you DKS for doing that.

The way they did the story/lore in Dark Souls is just about perfect for replayability. Hints, mostly. They leave it up to the player. You can enjoy just playing the game for a thousand hours when suddenly something will spark your interest in the story, and the game is completely refreshed for you.

Being able to completely ignore the story is really important for replayability, I think. Yet another way that other game franchises should follow Dark Souls' example.

I mentioned that, in another thread, about how a hidden story improves replayability, though I didn't know how to articulate why. You have done it!

Big, I'm one of the foremost(I like to imagine, Ego permitting) Lorehunters on the forum and I have to say in regards to your remarks that you are absolutely...Correct!

Dark Souls has a very ignorable story and I love that about the game. You don't really need to know anything to keep going, as the Crestfallen Warrior explains "Not much to go on is it? I have a feeling that won't stop you." This game has a deep story which is very interesting, and I'm so happy they don't force it upon the players. It means that it appeals to more than just one kind of person. Interested in just the combat? Go ahead. Interested in the story? Research if you like. It's this treatment of story that I adore about Dark Souls.

Gods!!! How long has the story for FFxv-1 been leaked?

Kidding aside - I totally agree about DkS' veiled storyline even though I actually really enjoy being told a story in most games I play. I prefer good stories of course.

    You're absolutely right .

There is still plenty of Story if you look into it

Every Item you find randomly has an actual reason to be there for example: You find Knight Kirks Armor at the Fair Ladys, you might think "Oh Cool another Armor set whatever" but if you want to think about it you discover that he was on the hunt for Humanity not out for himself but for the Fair Lady ! Ouch .

    Its fu*cking Briliant !

No...just no. It works in Dark Souls because the storytelling is odd and the game is not a narrative-focused work (yet the story is extremely effective and well done due to its subtlety) but woe when "ignorable story" is applied to other RPGs.

One thing is to add depth to the storytelling via subtlety, another thing is to make an ignorable plot.

True, when a game has a really bad plot it's boring to wade through the words time and time again, but I think the main problem in such a case is the quality of the plot rather than the fact that it's central to the game's experience.

Some games have a much stronger focus on their plot than Dark Souls, and I enjoy them too. They are another way of doing RPGs, neither better nor worse, though they can appeal more or less to you depending on how much you care about a good story.

Ya know I understand why Kirk is in Demon ruin and lost Izalith because he is close to the fair lady but it's only just clicked now why he's in the Depths. Kirk takes some time out from hunting people to farm humanity from rats. Who would have thought that NPC's grind as well.

That's one of the beauties of Dark Souls. They won't force you to know the story, instead you get to find it out on your own and at your own leisure.

I am working on an older PC game called Titans Quest now and I am also pleased with how they are handling the story so far, although I am only like 5 hours in. There is a more prevelant story than in DKS, but it is simple and only given in tiny little doses between long quest via in game dialogue. You are never not actually playing for more than 30 seconds to a minute every hour or so. In essence, your quest is the story and thats the way I like it.

Dark Souls is unique to me. I usually demand a great and obvious storyline that doesn't force me to search for the answers. However, Dark Souls is the exact opposite, apart from the ''great'' part, the storyline of Dark Souls is still great. I don't give a sh*t though! Will enjoy the game story or no story.

I wish I new a lot about video game programming and I could get like a blank slate of DKS and just build levels to quest through. No story whatsoever, you just appear and fight your way from point A to point B and see the sights along the way. I'd like to have a completely raw DKS stripped of everything other than the combat. I'm not suggesting in any way that that would be better, I just would like to be able to do that.
