Would it be so terrible if DkS2 is terrible?

In 2011 I pre-ordered a game which stole every second of my spare time, unlike any game I had previously encountered. It was amazing! Akin to the first time I played Metroid as a child.

At the time my hours could be easily thrown away; such was my carefree existence. Unfortunately, 6 months ago my girlfriend and I were blessed with a child. This severely cut into the allotted number of hours I gave over to frittering away my life, and as such, I haven't had the opportunity to play for a while.

About a week ago I put the DkS disk in, fired up the xbox and resumed from where I had left off.

I no longer wash or wipe. There isn't enough time!

I hope DkS2 is terrible so I can do all of the other things in my life that I enjoy so much; and give my daughter the life she deserves, not a shell of a human for a father.

EDIT: (It has become apparent that people don't handle sarcasm very well. Just to clarify, I'm a well(ish) rounded individual who is proficient at balancing school, work, family time and free time. The other stuff in this post is just my sense of humour. Sorry for my sense of humour. The question however, I believe is both valid and interesting so I would like people to think about it and post a response. Thanks)

Yes, it would be terrible if DKSII is terrible. You got to learn how to make time for your daughter and other activities. Find balance.

Ok.

Take out the other stuff I mentioned (none of which is true). What would the overarching consequences be? Really consider the question.

Maybe DkS2 is good, just good. Good enough to keep you hooked until the formula is diluted into... I don't know, maybe a massively popular game with none of the inherent qualities that made it great to begin with.

Or maybe it's terrible and the people at the core of the game develop a new game in five or ten years time which embodies all that DkS is and more.

I don't mind playing the long game.

Even if Dks2 is terrible there will always be Dks, which is singular, a complete vision. The worst sequel of all time couldn't sully Dark Souls, and so there it will always be, waiting to be re-played.

I'm pretty confident it will be good. Will it be as good as DkS? That I don't know because few games approach DkS' quality.

Why not try some SunBro co-op with your daughter?

I've had doubts on how good Dark Souls 2 is going to be, but I also have trust in From Software. I'm sure it'll come out great.

Obviously eating a rotten apple wouldn't be a good experience, but that's what you get for eating apples indiscriminately or putting too much stock in a particular orchard. The comparison is starting to break down, but I think you get it.

I can't really argue with the logic of the topic.

The rotten apple isn't there to make our day rotten or fill our mouth with a rotten taste. Yes, rotten apples do this but looking into an actual reason for the rotten apples existence was because it might not have been grown correctly. This is not to mention the rotten apple is there to define what a good apple is. If there is a tree full of rotten apples with one good apple you would think that those rotten apples were enough to get by until you ate the good apple. It is because we had the good apple we are able to define what apple is rotten and which one is good.

The good and the rotten apples must coincide in existence with each other in order for them the rotten and the good apple to be something more than "good enough".

However if you know where to grow your apple tree to where you can harvest multiple good apples that is what you would expect, good apples. Now of course there will be a rotten apple or two this must happen. It just must be said that when you know how to grow a good apple tree you know where and when to grow it. It is a rarity that on a first try that we are able to grow a healthy apple tree that would be able to sustain nothing more than a few bad apples. It is likely that when someone has already grown this healthy apple tree they already know what not to do, in other words they may have already grown an apple tree that had many rotten apples. Not only have we been able to make up for that tree but we now know not only how to grow a healthy apple tree but we also know what defines a good and rotten apple. We should know what defines the two types of apples and separate the two types of apples from each other. It's because of our experience with our bad apple tree and our rotten apples that we know how to grow both a healthy apple tree but to also do a good enough of a job on separating the rotten and the good apples.

TL;DR: From Software knows how to make good games, we've seen their handiwork through both Demon and Dark Souls. Why are we doubting them now? Because they have a different director? Maybe that might add a few things that we didn't really want to see but that isn't going to make the next Dark Souls a bad game, if anything different, and at it's worst an apple tree with a few more rotten apples than we would like. It's not going to be a game that is going to be entirely bad.

Unfortunately, in the case of my daughter; I've got a feeling Dks won't be available on Xbox 12. Though the thought of a playing Co-op with the wee one is a lovely thought.

Also, if anyone was worried, don't be. I'm still wiping and have not de-evolved into a YouTuber due to obsessive Dks.

I can't speak for anybody else, but for me, it would be a catastrophe.

Dark Souls is the only game that I can play online with others. I've played almost every game (except for sports and really bad titles) released in EU for PS3 up to middle of 2012 (the game's are so bad now that I quit on most of them) and I've found only two that I like to play online. One got it's servers shut down and the other one is Dark Souls.

So if DkS II will be terrible, I will have nothing to play online.

I might even be forced to get a life, or something! :pale:

I played Demons souls starting in January of 2010. The same month my daughter was born. Luckily I have never been a big sleeper (about 6 hours a night max) and would be able to get some time in when everyone was sleeping. In May that year I took a month of time thanks to FMLA laws applying to Daddies as well now (WOOHOO) and wrapped up Demons Souls. I got Dark Souls day one and platinum'd it in February 2012 I believe only playing a couple hours a night and not every night (Football takes up two nights a week that time of year, miscellaneous "cranky" toddler nights, etc.).

So to answer your question, there will always be opportunity for some time to yourself to unwind or what have you. If Dark Souls is terrible, it's not the end of the world. You'll just be wasting a very valuable commodity by playing something you don't like. My daughter made me realize I don't need to finish games I don't like, or go to the lengths to play I used to. FF XIII was rushed, Dragon Age was never finished and those are only high profile games.

If Dark Souls II is terrible, I will try to catch up with my PS+ catalog of games. If it's not, "me time" gets a new favorite!

It won't be terrible because the first two have only gotten better each time in my opinion but even if it's 'no dark souls' then just play dark souls... I have the same feeling towards music. People go on and on about how bad Metallica's newer records are and I agree. I pretty much HATE anything after Load. But it's not like someone is going to come along one day and say sorry guys you can't listen to Master Of Puppets anymore as we are deleting it from existence.

I hope dk2 is just as good so they keep making sequels because its my favorite game that I can play for hours. So hoping that dks2 is bad is like wishing the series would end. And I know there's a lot of people that would be disappointed if they payed 60 bucks just to get a testable game. If you have a video game addiction just limit your self to 2 hours a day.

It's probably more likely to be dissapointing to the hardcore fanbase, rather than outright terrible.

And I'm also calling copyright onion knight that there will be a huge internet flame war over this, akin to Mass Effect 3 and the new DMC. Where the hardcore fans and the rest of the fanbase will argue for several months, with the word 'entitled' being thrown around liberally.

Then IGN and/or Kotaku will write an article about it, calling Dark Souls fans entitled.

I've only ever been addicted to 2 games, counter strike source and dark souls.

Maybe it's something to do with laggy netcode? Jokes aside I think it's a good thing that you are so passionate about something but obviously there comes a point when you have to get your priorities in order. You just have to realistically sit down and ask yourself how it would feel to lose dark souls over losing your relationship with your daughter. Easy choice isn't it.

Edit - Maybe just play with a 120 build or something and pvp at the kiln as a darkwraith. It's quick and easy to find a match, you usually don't lose any humanity or anything, the fight's are usually just as quick as well. At least then you are getting your fix without it ruining your life I work full-time without looking after a family and that is hard enough so these days I basically just pvp at the kiln for my fix.

I only play the online FF's now, since they're the closest we're going to get to the classic 1-6 and 9.

And yep it's pointless, but it always happens. In fact it's already happened with the easy mode 'debate.'

The more popular a brand, the more it evolves to fit the needs of the consumer. You only have to look at other gaming brands to see how they bend to consumer opinion to sell units. Is that terrible?

DS and DkS represent a concept in how gaming should be approached with no view to sell a major amount of units. DkS2 doesn't/won't, it is the potential beginning of a marketable brand. POTENTIALLY. Is that terrible?

I don't think it's a bad thing. I don't think Dks2 will be terrible. I don't think DkS2 will be DkS. I also don't think there'll be a DkS3.

However, there is a Dark Souls and when, for whatever reason, I can no longer play, I will always have the fond memories.
