Ahh Alaska, land of the snowy tundra, gold, and enough polar bears to wrassle for a lifetime. Hope ya have a good time up there, and defeat the King of Bears!

Being a lifelong Alaskan I should have some kind of profound statement for a moment like this.
    Instead I have this:

“Although it will cause -10 charisma, a hat with ear flaps is best. Especially if it has a fur lining.”

“Despite what one would believe, there are relatively few times during the year in which a snowman can be built successfully.”

I hope these facts will enrich your life.

Are you being serious BTM? I've actually been considering it. The only thing that would keep me from doing it is that it's insanely far away from any family I've got, and my mom is getting older. I don't know if I want to take off and hardly ever see my mom again, because I know if I moved that far I probably wouldn't be able to afford to come back here too often. That and the day/night cycle there makes everything feel very surreal. I'm sure you get used to it after awhile, but it tweaked me out a bit when I was there. Made everything feel like a dream.

I love Alaska! Being a Russian living in the US, I view Alaska as a splendid vacation spot.

I bought land near Fairbanks. Now I'm working on getting an apprenticeship with a guide or a job as a packer. Plenty of help wanted postings.

I have the advantage of being single and free of obligations.

I hear it's beautiful, if oppressively cold.

    Enjoy, BTM. happy

Good luck, and have fun. I hope the lack of sun doesn't cause you to step into a state of depression, though I doubt it will.

wow man. It's amazing how similar our priorities are. I've been thinking of doing something almost identical to that after I graduate this May. Trying to find something to do without a lot of responsibility that I'll enjoy doing while I start trying to be a writer.

I'm not sure if I want to do it in Alaska yet though. I've been thinking about Seattle and Maine also. All 3 have awesome mountains to play on.

Let me know what you think of it if you end up out there. Maybe it'll help my decision a little easier.

It may be some time before I get to a computer. I'll be busy, but I won't forget to give you an update.

I have secured a job as a packer/apprentice/camp hand for a master guide in the lower part of the state. Eventually I will go build on the land I bought in the Interior.

I'm not planning on climbing anymore. I will be living off grid. Sustenance type living. Only thing I wanted to do since I was a kid.

What part of the lower state? When I went I spent a little time in Anchorage, then went to visit a friend in Wasilla, then went into Denali. Obviously Denali was awesome, but I really enjoyed the more populated places too. Evidently there's something about me that Alaskan women find appealing, because it was kind of a crazy couple weeks

Wow small world, I work as a camp hand (and airplane mechanic) in my family's hunting/backpacking business in the Wrangle Mts.

Its a great job if you can get in with a good group.

Unfortunately over the years I have been "promoted" to "paperwork/office guy" so I hardly ever get outside anymore.

You'll have a great time up there i'm sure BTM, the place is beautiful, and apparently Santa's hiding over there too. Don't tell the Canadians, we still think he's in the 'NORTH' North Pole at (postal code H0H 0H0), and I think a few other people are convinced he's in Greenland.
