Re: MLGS Build in need of advice
drop the shield altogether, rely on fast rolling and your MLBH to maintain spacing. two handing your MLGS and MLBH is the way to go anyway so a shield is pretty much useless in PVP.
the dark hand is a great substitute for a shield, 80/80/80 defense should not be overlooked plus it weighs next to nothing.
lighten up your armour so you fast roll with a bit less endurance.
wear the wolf ring with the ring of favor and protection. i don't think the crown of dusk or the bellowing dragon ring buffs either the MLGS or the MLBH so you won't need them.
drop strength down to 16 and leave dexterity at about 12 so you can use a magic or enchanted (not sure which would be best) composite bow if you like. move the rest of your points into vitality and intelligence, 50 in each should do.
fill your attunement slots with great soul arrow, they are fast, have more castings and track better than the other more overused spells. at 50 int, the damage is decent enough. besides, the majority of your DPS will be from the MLGS anyway.

Hmmm….good advice, comes down to preference though.

So much this.

yes

all true
drop strength down to 16 and leave dexterity at about 12 so you can use a magic or enchanted (not sure which would be best) composite bow if you like. move the rest of your points into vitality and intelligence, 50 in each should do.

yep.
Personally, I think the MLGS is best for a magic tank. Its stunlock is crazy and with some poise, you should be able to keep up in the dps race, fast roll or mid roll.
Since you're going to have intelligence, I strongly recommend Strong Magic Shield, especially on a Darkhand. The MLGS still works very nicely one-handed.
Also, having castings in your arsenal could be a waste depending on your playstyle. MLGS is a spellsword at its best.
However, if you plan on using pyros, or other castings, I'd suggest Velka's Rapier. Especially if you're fast rolling, casting, and maybe even considering the DWGR.
Finally, Nybbles deserves a plus one.

Yep. The greatest part is it doesn't show. The only way you can tell if someone does it is:
1) If you see them do it.
2) There is a very faint blue glow around your hand along with the purple/black glow that already exists. Its almost immpossible to see though.
Also, I use Strong Magic Shield on my +5 lightning Bonewheel Shield...yep, thats right. 8)
In addition, you can use it on weapons in your off hand, ie long sword, spear, etc. Not sure if you can do it on "unbuffable weapons" though.

Demon's Spear is unbuffable right? I used SMS on that. Made me block all damage with it. It did however still drain stamina, so I think that that feature might be reserved for actual shields.

Well, that answers that.
If I remember right, the only difference you'll notice in using SMS on a weapon vs a shield is the stamina drain is not reduced nearly as much, as compared to using it on a shield. Thereby not allowing you to tank as many hits in a row.

Nybbles and Animal are right on the money for a MLGS, and get dwgr on there as they suggested too. Get good Vit, good End and make your movement fast.

Re: MLGS Build in need of advice
I'd prolly sport this at sl 55: 7 poise version
Some might not like 7 poise, but here's how I'd play it.
-2 darkhands for toggle escapes/parries
-HCSM, 31 int for all 5 orbs, setting up SMS, and MLGS ranged attacks.
-SMS for other mages and ele weps.
-DWGR and SMS together will make you annoyingly invincible for at least 15 seconds.
-If someone casts VoS...so what really...if someone casts GMB, menu swap to ele Claymore. You still might get some phantom damage from HCSM after your opponents GMB wears off making your int stat still semi-effective if you cant menu swap back to MLGS.
Buuut, some people might want to magic tank with more poise. To each their own. Heck you dont even really need any castings if you dont want.
***Compliment from a Jupiterite.... ...thanks
PS-My playstyle is almost always geared towards forest or organized 2 vs 2, not that this wouldn't work in 1vs1. Say the Burg for instance. You can get off your HCSM for sure, but its a little harder imo.

Re: MLGS Build in need of advice
http://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/?c=144547760604565559 heres my take on a pure MLGS melee build no spells just BAM! and midroll does NOT make you a easy backstab target they actually made it faster and i had no problem with it before they did
