I'm not sure if you think that the only way to reach the sunlight altar is to kill the drake, but there an easier way. Just go on the opposite side of the stair on the bridge to avoid the fire breath. Wait there for a few second, you can buff your weapon lighting too if you want to get drake sword fast. When he jump on the bridge, run to the right of the birdge until you reach the tail and 2H hit it. You can normally slice it on one hit. Then keep on running, make sure to hide near the shrine until he fly away to the sunset. Light the fire and open the gate. Oh, don't forget to praise the sun
