Even I'd take the cat if it's being put down otherwise, and I detest cats. I'm no animal rights buff, but I'm not about to allow an animal to die for no reason. I don't see why people do that crap. Even shelters at least give people a chance to take it before putting it down.

Well, quite frankly, it's because a lot of irresponsible adults either decide to take in a pet they can't handle, or decide to give one to their kids regardless of whether their kid can handle it or not, then they give them back to shelters. I'm all for adopting animals in shelters, but there are way too many and not enough takers. The system is just as broken as the adoption system for humans. There has to be a point where animals and humans stop flooding the system and staying in adoption limbo for the rest of their natural lives.
