Best poetry you have read? Empty Best poetry you have read?

    Post by User1 Tue Apr 30, 2013 4:24 pm

Another thread which came up because of too much time contemplating life.

I would dig up a poem I wrote, but it would take some time to find, will try looking for it now though.

Anyways, what is the best poetry you have ever read? It could be in terms of creativity, possibly some kind of moral behind it, etc.

Aah, the poem I wrote. Meh, here I go:

One fateful day, I realised a light,
Coming from the end of the tunnel,
This light, making my life bright,
    Firstly making me fumble.

I did not know what to say,
I could not let this be shunned,
The beauty I saw on this day,
    Made me utterly stunned.

    I approach, taking a chance.
    The unlikely became truth,
It turned out to be true romance,
This was a great day, forsooth.

The light lit up more than the tunnel,
The light lit up my life,
    The light solved the puzzle,
    The light ended my strife.

And on this fateful day it seems,
I felt I could live again,
    My fate, was deemed,
Something that shall not be changed in vain.

Not very good, I know, but I imagine it was good at the time, and it's kinda obvious who it was directed at. winking

She sat on the bridge at midnight
Her lips were all a quiver
    She gave a cough
    her leg fell off
    and floated down the river.

Seriously Patrick Kavanagh's oh stony grey soil of monaghan. Kavanagh wasn't about the words but how they sounded as they came out.

Oh stony grey soil of monaghan
the love from my laugh you thieved
you took the *** child of my passion
and gave me your clod concieved.

His On raglin road was another, turned into classic irish trad song by Luke Kelly, i'm not a big irish trad fan but the song is epic.

I'm a big fan of Poe. The Raven of course but many others too.

As for why, while he often uses a pretty vanilla rhyme scheme it's often in contrast to his darker themes. Also, his cadence can often leads to a suggested anxiety while reading which is often exacerbated by repetition leading me to actually feel very tense while reading.

    One of my favorite examples:
    The Bells:

Now, if you're like me, there is a conflict mentally reading this. Due to the repetition my brain feels like I should continue increasing the speed at which I read it. However, there is another desire to keep on pace. This poem literally makes my heart race when I read it as a result of the mental distress the conflict causes. Great job Poe!

I've also written at least one decent poem, but this is long enough already (even though that sentence is longer than the poem big grin )

    "As the falling rain
    trickles among the stones
    memories come bubbling out.
    It's as if the rain
    had pierced my temples.
    Streaming
    streaming chaotically
    come memories:
    the reedy voice
    of the servant
    telling me tales
of ghosts. They sat beside me
    the ghosts
    and the bed creaked
    that purple-dark afternoon
when I learned you were leaving forever,
    a gleaming pebble
    from constant rubbing
    becomes a comet.
    Rain is falling
    falling
    and memories keep flooding by
    they show me a senseless
    world
    a voracious
    world--abyss
    ambush
    whirlwind
    spur
    but I keep loving it
    because I do
    because of my five senses
    because of my amazement
    because every morning,
because forever, I have loved it
    without knowing why."

I'm a big fan of Blake, his work falls short in some areas but his thinking was incredibly ahead of its time.

    Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
    In the forests of the night;
    What immortal hand or eye,
    Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
    Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

    Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
    What immortal hand or eye,
    Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

I likes me some Shelley too, this poem in particular has real power.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".

Sorry for the continued postings, but I know quite a bit about 19th century poetry now that I just finished a class in it. Tennyson really was at his best when he was in despair and not just hiding behind the skirts of religion.

Be near me when my light is low,
When the blood creeps, and the nerves prick
And tingle; and the heart is sick,
And all the wheels of Being slow.
Be near me when the sensuous frame
    Is rack’d with pangs that conquer trust;
And Time, a maniac scattering dust,
And Life, a Fury slinging flame.
Be near me when my faith is dry,
And men the flies of latter spring,
That lay their eggs, and sting and sing
And weave their petty cells and die.
Be near me when I fade away,
To point the term of human strife,
And on the low dark verge of life
    The twilight of eternal day.

It's too long to post but Oscar Wilde's "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" is probably one of my favorite poems of all time. I also really like the stuff Tolkien did and included in LoTR, it has real power to tell a story and it leaves quite a bit to the imagination. I didn't like it at first but now I appreciate its musicality, particularly the Song of Earendil.

Better than most anyone could do lol, don't let it get you down. I write some poetry myself but always end up displeased with it. I did write a dark souls related one a while back to commemorate a covenant event, if you don't mind me posting it since it doesn't hold up to actually good poetry.
