Re: Humans in Dark Souls
1. Undead existing before the First Flame began to fade is impossible. The Undead curse is a symptom of the flame fading.
2. The Undead curse only affects humans, not the giants or the god-race.
3. Kalameet is not an Everlasting Dragon; he is an ancient dragon. Important distinction. He doesn't even drop a dragon scale when you kill him.

Re: Humans in Dark Souls
As an additional bit of information, it is theoretically impossible to anyone exist before they have a soul (Dark or otherwise). We are specifically told that souls are the source of all life.
Which begs the question; did the lords actually "find" the lord soul, or were they created BY the lord souls?

That's why the Everlasting Dragons aren't technically alive- apparently they are more akin to the environment than actual living creatures. Maybe that's why there are still loads flying about in Dark Souls 2?
Well, Quelaan says that her Mother found the Lord Soul which granted her pyromancy if you use the talk option with her enough. So I figured they were just weak things before finding the souls and becoming badasses.

Hold your horses. Nobody said anything about Everlasting Dragons in Dark Souls II.

Re: Humans in Dark Souls
I like how the Hellkite Drake is almost the same size as Kalameet but the latter is supposed to be an Ancient Dragon that not even the freaking Gods dared face and honestly you have more chance of not being OHKO by him than the Hellkite Drake.

Re: Humans in Dark Souls
I think it actually makes sense that undead were around before the flame. They found souls within the flame, and now that the flame is dying out the souls are going out with it and reverting them back to undead. And maybe it just starts with the weakest souls which is why only humans are ring effected and not the lords. Maybe once the flame went out the lords souls would have started fading too.

@Hach and Alchemy; yeah I know what a damn drake is, I'm not stupid. Though Pear is right, they are wyverns *glares at Bethesda*

Is it me, or does the dragon look "zombie-ish"? Have a look at his chest, he's got some pieces of his "skin" just hanging out like something tore it off or it decayed. This could be a new form of the zombie dragons from Dark Souls in Dark Souls II, except this one is more like it recently died and later revived.
About the humans, if the Furtive Pygmy found the Dark Soul that later humans inherit, what happens to the "humans" before him? Did the world form with Undead first? Do the humans before the Pygmy get ****-outta-luck and not get the Dark Soul? Did those humans later become ancestors of the humans who don't inherit the Dark Soul?

For all we know, Everlastings can heal themselves slowly; they still are around in DS, even if they are a...bit worse for wear in some cases.
...what the heck is the difference between an ancient dragon and everlasting dragon, Pear?
No, there were no humans before the Furtive Pygmy, he's the patriarch of the human race, the first. There were no other humans before him.

I only wish that there was at least one true Everlasting Dragon we can see or interact with it, even battle him...

Re: Humans in Dark Souls
An everlasting dragon can't be killed by mundane means; the Everlasting Dragon of Ash Lake is an example. Seath would be too, but he's a special case. The lore and intro sequence lead us to believe that everlasting dragons exist outside of the cycle of life and death, and may not even be considered flora or fauna. They're like animated rocks.
Ancient dragons are descendants of everlasting dragons that presumably don't have the Scales of Immortality. According to the Obsidian Greatsword, Kalameet is the last ancient dragon. We can assume with some leeway that the dragon in the DkS2 trailer is one of these. Trailer dragon and Kalameet share lots of similarities. Note that Kalameet doesn't even drop a Dragon Scale. Neither does the Gaping Dragon, which is a "distant, deformed descendant" of the everlasting dragons.
The important thing, from the little we know, is that everlasting dragons seem mindless (like constructs) whereas ancient dragons are living beings that appear malevolent.
